I brought a bag of McCain Homebakes because it was on a special introduction offer in Morrisons at £1.49 for a good size bag. It's basically a frozen potato bake, you just pour out as much as you need into an oven proof dish and then cook it for about 30 minutes. It's a brill idea and so easy to do, but I realised quick that it's not a very cost effective way to do a potato bake because even though the slices of potato look big in the bag they are actually coated in the thick frozen cheese sauce and will shrivel down to nothing when they are cooked. Well, not shrivel exactly but they do get a lot smaller! To give you a bit of an idea this 1 bag did me and my dad one portion each the other night and then there was a few slices left in the bag that I cooked for my toddler sister this morning. The portions weren't even that big so I reckon a bag would only do 2 people at a push, to feed a family you'd be better off to buy a bag of spuds and a cheese sauce! They do taste wicked though. After the cooking time the potatoes have cooked through to be soft but still a bit firm and the frozen sauce has melted to give a delish rich cheese sauce that goes so nice with the potatoes. It's lovely and creamy and if you leave it to cook for a bit longer than it says then the edges will burn a bit and them bits are yummy, don't tell me dad but I saved them bits for me! lol We had ours with scampi and it was perfect to go with it because it has got a nice strong cheese flavour that went nice because of the scampi having such a faint taste. You could have it with a salad too, but you'd probably need the whole bag then because the Homebake potato isn''t very filling. Even though I love the flavour, at full price this frozen potato product isn't going to make sense to buy very often especially since we all love our spuds in this house!
