Morrisons Cous Cous

Description: Manufacturer: Morrisons

If you have read any of my earlier reviews (thank you so much, I really appreciate all reads, rates and comments!) then you are likely to already know that over the festive season, I put on a few pounds. Since then, I have been trying to lose them (successfully in case you are interested!) through a combination of healthy foods, exercise and also by avoiding snacking.

Cous cous is low in fat (0.2g per 100g) and sugar (2.5g per 100g) and makes an excellent alternative to potatoes or rice (here are 362 calories per 100g) It can be eaten plain or mixed with loads of different things to add flavour. I either like to add spices such as chilli flakes and a little tomato paste, or lemon juice or vinagerette, along with chopped tomatoes and cucumber. It is also fantastically versatile and can be eaten hot or cold. In addition, the beauty of cous cous is that it is ready to eat in minutes and is a great way to have a hot and filling snack when you are pushed for time.

A 500g bag of this cous cous will cost you just £0.70 and because it fluffs up once it is cooked, a little goes further than you might expect.

To prepare, simply add the required amount of water (full instructions are on the packet so you can measure the amount you need based on how much you are preparing) and a little oil if you prefer and then either simmer gently on the hob for five minutes or do what I do and pop it into the microwave. I never bother adding oil as I find that the cous cous is tasty enough without it. Leave the cous cous to stand for a few minutes and then fluff it with a fork, then serve, it really is that simple!

The cous cous has a lovely texture, it is soft but each little grain is seperate, light and fluffy. There is no sogginess and each mouthful is exactly as it should be. Without adding any flavourings to it, the cous cous may seem a little bland for some but this really depends on what you are serving it with because it soaks up juices and sauces perfectly, quickly absorbing the flavours.

I like to serve this cous cous with fish, chicken, salads and spicy dishes, there really is no end to the variety of foods that it goes with. If you haven't tried cous cous before then I definitely recommend this one to you as it tastes great and offers excellent value for money too.

Summary: Well worth trying
