I suspect this was a substitution on my Tesco delivery as I like smash and tesco own brand instant mash, and omg it is absolutely the worst food I have ever had the misfortune of purchasing. It smells like baby rice and tastes like baby rice flavoured with potato flavouring. It is almost pure white and you need to add a considerable amount of salt to make it taste of anything at all.I am not at all convinced there was any real potato in it.There isn't an option to rate it 0 stars so it got a 1 which is more than it deserved!

      An average instant mash.

I love to cook for myself & my husband but sometimes I just do not have the time or the motivation to cook up a feast from scratch. This is when I tend to use instant mashed potato for a quick meal that I can whip up in just a few minutes. This box of instant mashed potato costs just 54p for 230g and I only purchased it because the value one that I usually purchase wasn't available in the Metro store that I was visiting. But that is 20p per 120g so the price isn't that much more expensive for this anyway. This is very simple to make, just open the cardboard box, open the packet within and tip the potato flakes in to a bowl, then add hot water and using a fork or spoon mix it all together just like you would a stuffing mix basically. It takes about 30 seconds to put it together and I then add mustard, cheese spread and a little paprika and then mix those through as well. I then put mine on a baking tray and then cook in the oven for 20 minutes but as soon as you have added the hot water to this it is ready to eat and I just do this to add some crispiness and flavouring to the mash. On its own this mash is bland, plain and very boring. It does not really resemble real mash much at all, dependant on how much water you put in of course, but I wouldn't want to eat this on its own with anything as its just boring and not very appetising, however, when I add the bits I have mentioned above to it they turn in to lovely mustard cheesy mash balls that are very tasty and work well with a variety of easy oven dinners. This is not as good as home made mash, or even ready made microwave mash, however, if you want to use it as the base for a recipe then its not bad at all and I never get any complaints when I serve this up in my house. I am going to give this 3/5 as on its own its not very nice but I have tried worse instant mashed potato than this and it is easy enough for me to dress this up and improve the taste.

      Not Bad For The Price!

I brought a box of this Oak Lane Instant Mashed Potato because even though I don't like fake mash much, my little sister does and it's quicker to do her some of this up than peel and cook potatoes. Lazy I know but some instant mash can taste kind of ok if you put a bit of butter in it when it's done. I thought I'd try this one because it was only about 60p for a decent sized box, you make it up the same way as any other instant mash with boiling water. You just tip however much you need into a bowl, add the water and stir like mad until it's as fluffy as you can get it.... this is when you need to add your butter if you're using it and then give it another big stir until all the butter is mixed in. This mash doesn't actually taste all that bad. It's quite bland tasting but by the time I poured a bit of gravy over it that went away and it started tasting quite nice, I think it would be mega boring without butter in it so I deffo recommend that even if you're the sort of person who isn't mad keen on butter. The mash is very pale looking, it doesn't look like it's going to be very nice because of how pale it is. The potato is nearly white looking and like I said before, if you pour gravy on then it will look a lot better but just a pile of this mash looks majorly boring. The flavour is like Smash mash, that means it's not like REAL mashed potato at all but is one of them foods that you know you're not supposed to like but do anyway! lol It's not something I'd eat myself but when my sister had some the other day I accidentally made too much up and ate the leftover, it was quite nice...... well not nice exactly but it was ok and at a push if you was in a rush you could make yourself a bit of this up for a quick snack with a bit of gravy and maybe a sneaky pie! lol Recommended..... not gourmet food but it's instant mash so what do you expect???
