Every Friday in the little_feets household, we crack out an Old El Paso dinner kit and cook up a mexican feast! We could live on Mexican food every day of the week, but having made the choice to keep our mexican consumption to a minimum, we decided to save it for a special day (which happens to be my treat day, as I'm on a constant diet!). These spicy tomato and pepper fajitas are one of our favourites, as they quench our love of spice and provide us with something incredibly tasty, filling and healthy for tea!
If you're not aware of who Old El Paso are, they are a fantastic company that are generous enough to provide us in the UK with a little taste of Mexico through their dinner kits, spice mixes and individual ingredients. They have been sharing their delicious Mexican food products with the rest of the world since 1938 and since bringing their name and products to the UK in 1984, they have fast become the UK's favourite brand of Mexican food. For more information about Old El Paso and lots of fantastic food ideas, you can visit the official website at: www.oldelpaso.co.uk.
'Roasted Tomato & Pepper Fajita Dinner Kit's can be found in all good supermarkets. I have seen them for sale in Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys. You can also sometimes pick these kits up in smaller cornershop chains such as Cost Cutter and Co-op. The Old El Paso products were difficult to find at one time, but now most Supermarkets have a 'Mexican' section in the world foods aisles alongside the overseas cooking sauces and ingredients.
The 'Roasted Tomato & Pepper Fajita Dinner Kit' come with a price tag of between £2.60 - £3.00 dependant on where you purchase it from. This said, a lot of supermarkets do put Old El Paso products on offer quite a lot, and you can sometimes pick up individual kits for £2.00 each so it's worth to keep checking back just in case!
The box states that once made up as detailed, this 'Roasted Tomato & Pepper Fajita Dinner Kit' will serve 3 - 4 people. In my opinion, this is at a stretch. Myself and my girlfriend make up the whole kit and eat it between us, hardly ever finishing the entire contents, but never leaving much! I would say that realistically, this kit will feed 2 people generously, 3 people fairly and 4 people as a light meal/lunch.
Old El Paso chooses to package its products just as vibrant as the flavours within the box. The packaging is predominantly bright yellow in colour with a red slate roof along the top of the box, below which the Old El Paso text logo and product name is placed. The front of the box also provides customers with a delicious looking picture of how the finished product should look. The box front shows the spice rating, the products included inside the box, a list of products you will need to add to make the fajitas, and the nutritional information at a glance. The back of the box follows the same red and yellow vibrant colour scheme and gives a yummy sounding in-depth description of the fajitas, along with step by step instructions that include pictures to make everything that much more simple! The full ingredients list and nutritional information can be found around the side edges of the box.
The 'Roasted Tomato & Pepper Fajita Dinner Kit' box contains some of the ingredients you will need to create these delicious fajitas. These ingredients include: 8 soft salsa tortillas, 1 packet of roasted tomato and pepper fajita spice mix and 1 packet of roasted tomato and pepper salsa. To make the fajitas you will need to add a few ingredients yourself, including 500g chicken breast, 1 red pepper, 1 green pepper and 1 onion. You can also add any condiments/extras you like ie) sour cream, jalapenos and guacamole.
Using a 'Roasted Tomato & Pepper Fajita Dinner Kit' is easy as pie! The back of the box comes complete with easy to follow step-by-step instructions that guide you through the burrito making process. Simply follow these steps to create the most delicious spicy fajitas:
1. Slice your chicken breast, peppers and onion into thin strips.
2) Stir-fry the chicken for a couple of minutes in a splash of oil. Throw in the onion, peppers and spice mix and stir to coat all the ingredients, cooking the chicken through throughly but keeping the onions and peppers crunchy.
3) Warm the tortillas by piercing the packaging several times and microwave on full power for 35-40 seconds. Alternatively you can warm the tortillas through in the oven by removing the packaging, separating tortillas and wrap in foil. Cook for 10 minutes at 200°C (180°C for fan assisted ovens), gas mark 4. Keep them covered and warm until ready to serve.
4) Take the steaming hot chicken filling, warm tortillas, salsa and any other suitable condiments to the table (sour cream, jalapenos) and dig in!
When cooking, the spiciness of the mix is definitely apparent. The scent of the spice mix fills the kitchen as soon as it is added to the pan, and smells absolutely delicious. The spice heat is apparent just in the scent that eminates from the pan, that wonderful little tingle in your nostrils that lets you know that when finished cooking, things are about to get a little hot! I love the completely delicious smell that comes from the completed fajita once stuffed and wrapped - the warm, tomato-y scent of the tortilla, the spicy, exotic filling and the refreshing and juicy aroma of the salsa- everything combined is just heavenly!
The taste is something to delight in! This 'Roasted Tomato & Pepper Fajita Dinner Kit' makes the most delicious of fajitas that are enough to tantalise the tastebuds. The fajitas pack a wonderful punch from the medium ranked tomato and pepper spice mix which is a fantastic change from the usually smokey flavours that usually accompany fajitas. The spice mix is enough to cause a wonderful heat inside the mouth and a tingle on the lips, but tastes absolutely fantastic at the same time with a delicious salsa like flavour. The salsa tortillas are wonderfully soft and moreish in the mouth, and I do find that I prefer these to the regular plain tortillas as the tomato flavour adds that something special! The chunky salsa that comes with the kit is one of my favourite salsas out there, the perfect combination of chunky texture and fresh chopped tomato flavour. The mix of the flavours of the spicy chicken and crunchy veg filling along with the wonderfully tomato-y tortilla wraps and the chunky salsa is completely delicious. Definitely one to crack open if you're looking to put some spice in your life (and your mouth)!!
In my opinion the fajitas made using this 'Roasted Tomato & Pepper Fajita Dinner Kit' are absolutely delicious! They're a welcome break from the usual smokey flavoured fajitas that are widely available. I would say that I greatly prefer this type of fajitas to the smokey bbq flavour that Old El Paso also make, but this could just be down to the fact that we greatly over did the smokey bbq fajitas in this house for a long time! The salsa tortillas are absolutely delicious and bring that little something new to the table, replacing the plain tortillas that you get with the smokey fajitas and adding a lovely tomato flavour. I love to pile my salsa tortillas high with the spicy chicken, pepper and onion filling, then dollop the chunky salsa ontop with a sprinkling of cheese, adding a handful of jalapenos and cooling things down with a good splodge of sour cream. Once folded into the perfect fajita, these are absolutely divine! They're deliciously spicy and wonderfully tasty at the same time and are definitely my favourite option for fajitas out there.
The only downside with this 'Roasted Tomato & Pepper Fajita Dinner Kit' is that the spice mix is rather spicy! With Old El Paso there appears to be a large jump between 'mild' and 'medium' on their spice-o-meter. If you're like me and enjoy adding a few too many jalapenos to your fajitas, it may be worthwhile cutting back on the spice mix a little and only adding half of the packet. Adding the whole spice mix sachet to the fajitas always clears out my airways and has my lips tingling like crazy! So, just beware if you're not a huge fan of spice, as Old El Paso 'medium' is a lot spicier than you'd imagine!
