Pizza Express - American Pizza
Advantages: Tastes great, just like in the restaurant, very tasty
I love pizzas, I do quite often make my own but sometimes its easier to have a shop bought one when you don't have time to make your own. One of the recent shop bought pizzas we have tried is the Pizza Express American. Pizza Express as many people know is the very popular pizza chain of restaurants that you can find in most cities across the country and I have eaten there many times and I do enjoy their pizzas so was keen to see whether the shop bought ones would match their freshly made ones in their restaurants.
The pizzas do come in various sizes we had the 250g one. The pizza comes in a blue cardboard box with the pizza express logo in white on the front and underneath the fact that it is American and the description "pure pepperoni for those who like their flavours strong and simple." There is no picture of the pizza which is in contrast to most pizzas where you can either see the pizza or see a picture of it. Pizza Express obviously believe that people will buy it on the strength of their name rather than having to see the pizza itself. On the back of the box is a little postcard that tells how the American pizza was invented, supposedly back in 1965 when an American came into their restaurant and described the pizza he loved back at home and they made him their own Pizza Express version covered with spicy pepperoni and then they added it to the menu - not sure if that's true or not!
Opening up the box the pizza itself is wrapped in a polyethene wrapping and on top of a plastic disc. You must remove both of these before cooking. The pizza looks homemade which is appealing, it doesn't have the perfect uniform crust like some shop bought pizzas have, its wider at some bits than others. The pizza has a lovely tomato topping, slices of pepperoni and lots of cubes of mozzarella.
Pizza Express suggest drizzling a tablespoon of olive oil onto the pizza before popping it in the oven which I do. It takes only 7-9mins in the oven, cooking instructions are included for electric, fan and gas ovens.
Taking the pizza out of the oven it smells and looks very tasty. The mozzarella has melted into each other so the whole pizza is covered in a lovely thick cheesy layer. The pizza has a wonderful crisp base, the tomato topping is rich and flavoursome. The pepperoni has a nice taste, spicy but not too hot. All in all my husband and I both felt that it was the best shop bought pizza we have ever tasted. We had the small pizza between us for lunch along with some bread. I think if you wanted to have it as a main meal for two you would need to buy the larger size.
The only downside in my opinion about the pizza is the cost. At £3.99 for the smaller size pizza (this is the price in Waitrose, it may be cheaper elsewhere) it is quite expensive. However we had bought them on a buy one get one free offer so it worked out at only £2 each and for the quality and the taste of the pizza it was a price I was happy to pay. The pizzas are in the chilled cabinet but can be frozen once you get home so my advice is stock up when they are on a BOGOF offer and keep a few in the freezer.
These are my favourite shop bought pizzas. They are expensive but they are made with quality ingredients and taste just like the pizzas you would buy in the restaurant. I am off to try some of the other varieties in the range.
