Pizza Express - American Pizza
Disadvantages: price, high in carbs & sugar
** This review is for the Pizza Express American Simple Pepperoni Pizza **
Earlier in the week I posted a review on DooYoo regarding my disastrous attempt to heat up an Iceland frozen pizza and ended up throwing the whole lot into the bin.
Still fancying a pizza and with the Pizza Express range being half price at the moment in Morrisons I picked up one of the Pepperoni variety and am pleased to report that my faith in pre-prepared pizza has been restored!
Housed in a simple dark blue flat box, the information tells us that this is "individually handmade" and it contains "Thinly sliced pepperoni and creamy mozzarella cubes on our original tomato sauce"
The back of the box explaines that the dough and tomato sauce is the the same as what they have used in their restaurants since 1965 and that they are made by people and not machines.
Upon taking the pizza out of the box you notice straight away that they dough is handmade and hand prepared, there is no uniformity to the edges that you expect to see on mass produced, pre-made pizzas and the topping is distributed across the top in an even but haphazzard manner. There are generous splodges of mozzarella cubes and pepperoni slices and green sprigs of herbs and spices can be spotted.
Cooking instructions are simple, just heat in an oven for 10-12 minutes at gas mark 6, olive oil is recommended to be drizzled over the pizza before heating but as we are not keen on the taste we didnt bother.
The taste is sublime!, possibly one of the tastiest pizzas I have ever had that has come from a supermarket. It reminded me of a takeaway pizza or one that you eat inside a restaurant it was that good. The tomato sauce is rich but not overpowering and the flavour of the cheese and spicy pepperoni really compliment one another. The dough base is not at all stodgy and doesnt take away from the topping whatsoever. Sometimes I find supermarket pizza to be all base and no topping, but this balanced the two perfectly. Even after finishing you can still taste the pepperoni but rather than it being unpleasant it lingers nicely behind and is a great reminder of what you have just eaten.
GDA information is listed on the box as being: (based on 1/3 pizza)
4.9g of which sugars
6.4g of which saturates
So, as you can see it not exactly the healthiest thing to eat, but like lots of other delicious foods that are bad for you I dont see if being too bad if eaten in moderation or once in a while.
Ingredients are listed as containing: Dough: Wheat flour, water, salt, yeast, sugar, flour treatment agent, dextrose, emulsifier, E472e, rapeseed oil, antioxidant E300. Topping: Tomato sauce (tomato, salt, basil, pepper) Mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, rapeseed oil, tomato puree, cows milk
Allergen advice warns that the produce contains Milk and Wheat Gluten and although the pizza is produced in a nut free environment to a nut free recipe they cannot guarantee the ingredients will be 100% nut free (makes you wonder where the pesky nuts could come from then really...)
In conclusion then, I really enjoyed this pizza, its a perfect Saturday lunch/tea whilst chilling out watching the sport or Xfactor. High in carbs and sugar and other nasties, but a treat every now and then isnt going to hurt is it?
I would buy this pizza again, even when its back up to its original price of £4.99 (!!) Quality product gets 5/5 from me.
