Pizza Express - American Pizza
Advantages: Excellent quality, good price, easy to cook, tasty well balanced flavours
Pizza Express is a chain of restaurants specialising in you guessed it...Pizza! I had been a couple of the restaurants and found the pizza's to be very good indeed but they are rather expensive so when I noticed that Pizza Express had launched a range of its most popular pizza's in supermarkets I was eager to try them. Since then I have tried several of them with the most recent being the American.
The pizza's come in small and large sizes, the one I purchased was the large 510g American which was on a half price special offer price at Tesco for just £2.50. I actually had a £1.00 off coupon for the pizza from Tesco so it actually worked out at just £1.50 which I think is a complete bargain for a branded pizza.
The American pizza is a thin based pizza topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella cubes and thinly sliced pepperoni. The pizza comes in a blue box with the pizza inside laid on a thin polystyrene base, wrapped in thin clear plastic. There is a patterned cut away section on the front of the box allowing you to see the pizza inside. On the back of the box you can find very detailed ingredients listings, cooking instructions, storage instructions and nutritional information.
As the pizzas are fresh and not frozen they do not take very long to cook. The cooking instructions tell you to place the pizza directly on the oven shelf and to drizzle with 1tbs of olive oil. The instructions for my fan assisted oven are to cook the pizza on 180 degree C or 350 degrees F for just 10-12 minutes. I found that 10 minutes was just enough and that the olive oil drizzle makes a huge difference as it stops the pizza from drying out.
The pizza itself was really easy to cut up with a pizza cutter and the crust seemed nice and crispy while the base seemed to stay rather soft which personally is just how I like my pizza to be. Overall I was very impressed with the pizza as it was extremely tasty and fantastic quality and could have quite easily have been from the restaurant. With the base being quite thin it was not too stodgy and allowed all the lovely flavours of the topping to come through. The balance of the herbs in the tomato sauce was just right and complemented the creaminess of the cheese and slight spiciness of the pepperoni perfectly.
I will certainly be buying this pizza again and would even pay the full price of £5.00 as it is still far cheaper than going to a restaurant and the pizza will easily feed 2-3 people as part of a main meal and it does not compromise on quality. In my opinion this is a restaurant quality pizza at a great price and one that I would certainly recommend anyone to try.
Summary: A excellent restaurant quality pizza to eat at home.
