      Delcious sausages perfect for hotdogs and vegetarians!

      I have mentioned in previous reviews that I am a vegetarian. I am also a fussy eater (which does not help! haha). A few months ago, I came across the Quorn range in Sainsburys (although the range is available in most supermarkets). I had briefly been introduced to the range a few years ago as I had been buying the burgers. However, it is only in the last few months that I have really started taking an interest and buying the products.

      For those of you who don't know, Quorn is a brand which uses mycroprotein (which comes from the fungi family) to make vegetarian meat alternatives. They produce all kinds of vegetarian alternatives to meat such as; ham slices, chicken slices, chicken nuggets, burgers, hot dogs, mince, sausage rolls, scotch eggs etc. In total there are over 100 different Quorn products.

      I have tried the ham slices, chicken nuggets and burgers. Today I will be reviewing their Frankfurters (hot dogs) which I would now consider to be one of my favourite foods. I bought my hotdogs from Sainsburys for a price of £2.12 four sausages, which when buying I do think that they are quite expensive, but when eating them I think that they are well worth the money.

      The sausages come in a 'plastic bag' like packaging. The packaging is very attractive, if you look at the back of the packet you can see the four frankfurters.

      To look at the sausages are quite large (they are very long, around 20cm per sausage) and are light brown in colour.

      The frankfurters are very easy to prepare. All you need to do is add them to boiling water and cook for 12-14 minutes.You need to boil them in the packaging that they come in. I find that I like to cook mine for the whole 14 minutes as I find that they have more flavour than if I pull them out two minutes earlier. When cooking, the franfurters have a slight smoky smell.

      I love these frankfurters as they are so tasty. They have a great smoky taste which is full-flavoured yet not too overpowering. They have a meat like texture, and if you were blindfolded when eating these, you would think that they were meat, although of course they are not.

      I like to eat mine like hot dogs; one sausage inbetween a long roll with plenty of tomato sauce. I find that the sausages are very filling and fill you up very quickly. On their website Quorn suggest that you can eat the sausages with chips and peas, and also suggest that they are great for hotdogs. I have only had mine as hotdogs, so therefore cannot comment on how well the sausages go with other foods, apart from bread and ketchup!

      Nutrionally the sausages are very good for you. Each frankfurter contains just 83 calories. So you could eat a whole packet (4 sausages) for just three hundred and thirty two calories. The sausages are also very low in fat with just 0.7g of saturated fat per sausage. They are also high in protein, over 5g of protein per sausage, and just 0.5g of salt per sausage.

      The sausages contain egg and mustard and are produced in a factory which uses peanuts milk and gluten.

      One thing, and I think that it is the only think which I dislike about this product is...well it is not a fault of the sausages as I think that they are great, but more of a fault of how to cook them. The sausages come in a 'boil-in-the-bag' packaging. When I pull the bag out of the hot water (when they have finished cooking), the bag is slightly melted (well it has been in boiling hot water) and the writing on the back of the bag is melted and looks all stretched out, and is hard to read (you are probably wondering what my point is here). Well, I just think that as the hard-to-read writing on the back of the bag (after cooking) is very hard to read, it proves that the heat has (obviously) had some effect on the packaging, and so it worries me that as the plastic has melted, it has probably leaked 'chemicals' onto the sausages. I would prefer a different kind of packaging.

      However, I do think that the sausages themselves are great and I would definately recommend them, even if you are not a vegetarian, they still make a great quick, easy and above all is good for you.
