*I am actually reviewing the basics pizza from the chiller rather than the freezer (the picture is the freezer version*.
Me and the other half are massive fans of pizza, if we had our way we would be eating dominos every night! However, this gets quite expensive and we've been trying to find a cheaper alternative. In our village we have 4 shops for food, one being a Sainsburys local. When looking for a pizza a while back our eyes fell on this. A massive pizza for 99p-certainly worth a try!
So as I said it cost 99p for a 12 inch pizza, weighing 495g. In larger Sainsburys the pizza is also available in the smaller size of 7 inches for 46p. The pizza is placed on a polystrene board and then wrapped in clear film. On the film is a large sticker telling us it is a Sainsburys basics pizza. There is also a traffic light for the nutritional values.
Opening the pizza you can see that its not absolutely covered in cheese, however compared to a number of other supermarket 'value' options, I think this one contains the most cheese! Under the cheese you can see a deep red sauce and the base is deep pan and is quite pale in colour. The cheese used is Mozerella.
You can freeze this pizza on the day of purchase, making it a great purchase. To cook from chilled it is very easy, preheat the oven to 200 degrees and cook for 12-14 minutes. I always find it is usually ready by 12 minutes with the cheese bubbling and looking ready to eat!
When biting into the pizza, you do notice that the base is quite soft, and softer than a number of branded pizzas. However, it is not soggy like a number of other 'value' offerings and has a good flavour to it. On top of the pizza, there is plenty of cheese. The cheese has a good flavour to it, complementing the base well. The sauce is recognisable but not overpowering, it works really well with the cheese and all 3 ingredients combined together give a really nice tasting pizza. The pizza is really filling and will easily feed 3 people or 2 adults and 2 children as part of a main meal.
TIP: To make it more interesting, add a tin of baked beans!
For a pizza, I think that the nutritional values are actually ok. A quarter of the pizza provides you with 303 calories, 2.5g sugar, 6.2g fat (3.7g saturates) and 1.06g salt.
I would recommend anyone to buy this pizza as it tastes really nice. I prefer chilled pizzas to frozen and this one lived up to all expectations and more. I found it so much nicer than the Tesco alternative and now we often have one of these for tea. It is a great easy part of a meal because it is so quick and easy to prepare. Kids will love this and its not too messy either!
Summary: Fab pizza!
