This is a ready meal that lacks flavour and is unappealing

We bought a couple Sharwood's ready meals several months ago when they were on sale at our local ASDA for £1 each as we thought they'd come in handy if we were in a hurry or in case one of our family didn't fancy the main family meal. In fact, we forgot that we'd bought them and Sue's first thought when we discovered them at the bottom of the freezer is that they would be yuck. So, bearing this in mind Sue and I decided to take the bull by the horns or more likely endure the Sharwood's offerings as our children were away for a few days and would give us a tiny bit more space for our Christmas foof. I decided to try the Chicken Rice Chinese style which from the picture on the box seemed quite appetising and can be cooked in the oven or microwave. It is 340g and 445 calories, and apart from that I can't think of anything positive to say about this meal. It is bland..... that is to say IT HAS NO TASTE! In fact, the best bit of this meal was when I left half the dish for a rather tempting Cream Apple Turnover we bought from Sainsburys earlier this afternoon. The ingredients are: Rice, carrot, red pepper, peas and scrambled egg (Chinese style rice) Water, onion, soy sauce, vegetable oil, toasted sesame seed oil, ginger, garlic, yeast extract, modified maize starch (Chinese style sauce) Chicken breast - containing water and salt In fact the scrambled egg contains 10 seperate ingredients and soy sauce 6! This is certainly worth buying if you are on a diet - as you won't eat it all. This is a disgusting meal and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Not the best meal from the range but not bad neither!

When it comes to Sharwood's ready meals I really am chomping my way through them on a grand scale. Currently on offer in Asda for a pound a meal I have enjoyed all of the ones I have tried so far so couldn't wait to get my hands on this one! The Packaging: The meal itself comes in red and black box with a photograph of the rice on the front and I'm told that it is 'Rice Dishes' Sharwood's Chicken Rice Chinese Style 'A filling rice dish with tender chicken breast pieces and mixed vegetables cooked with authentic spices' and there is an at a glance nutritional chart displayed, I'm told it cooks in the microwave in 7 minutes, serves 1 person and that it weighs 340g a meal. On the back of the box other information listed includes ingredients and allergy advice being stated, cooking instructions are given as is a full nutritional breakdown chart and contact details for Kerry Foods are listed. Inside the meal comes in a black square plastic tray with see-through plastic over it. The Meal Itself: Well all you do with this meal is pop it in the oven for 35-40 minutes or in the microwave for 6 minutes (1 minute to stand). I always believe ready meals should be heated through quickly as they are a type of fast food and bung it in the microwave and thats it! It cooks through in that time really well and when its served it looks nice and colourful enough and is a reasonably large portion. The main of the meal is rice and you can see bits of scrambled egg in it, chicken, peas, red pepper and carrot and the whole lot is moistened with a little bit of light brown glossy sauce which is flavoured with garlic and ginger and all round nicely seasoned. The rice is moist and not one bit hard or swimming in sauce. The chicken is in chunks and is succulent and not chewy. The peas and other bits of vegetables are again, well cooked and not one bit soggy. The sauce is flavoursome with a hint of garlic and soy sauce to it and all in all it is a nice enough meal and as it says on the box....very filling! I found though there wasn't all that much sauce in the meal at all and I did get a bit bored with it after a while due to the quantity of rice however once again Sharwood's have once again given us a rather tasty and good quality meal. Nutritional Information Per 340g Serving: Calories: 445 Sugars: 2.7g Fat: 13.3g Saturates: 2.0g Salt: 2.63g Available in all good supermarkets etc.
