      The perfect ready meal

I've been trying to eat healthier lately with varying degrees of success. I used to cook all the time and be really experimental in the kitchen but tend to stick to the same few dishes over and over again these days. I try to avoid ready meals wherever possible because they are usually packed full of nasties like salt and additives but have found a new range of meals by Simply Organic which are much better than the rest. The list of ingredients on the back shows only a list of fresh ingredients with no E numbers in sight.

The vibrant vegetable mediterranean stew is available in 400g packs in the chiller cabinet. I bought mine for £1.99 from Tesco and saw they had another couple of meals in the range. It is vegetarian, meets the soil association organic standards and is also free of lactose, gluten and wheat.

The meal doesnt look too promising when you first open it, it is a dull red colour and looks rather lumpy with large chunks of vegetables visible. It does however smell delicious with a fresh tomato smell wafting out at you.

I followed the instructions and heated it in the microwave for a couple of minutes before spooning it into a bowl. The stew looks better now that the heat has thinned it out.

The taste is simply wonderful. There is a good mix of vegetables including red and green peppers, potaotes, green beans and chickpeas with a nice herby taste. The vegetables all taste perfectly cooked, none of them have gone mushy and the chunks are just the perfect size. I wouldn't have chosen potatoes or green beans myself if I was making a similar tomato based stew but these tastes all mingled perfectly together. The portion size is extremely generous, so large that I had it over two meals served with a nice big hunk of buttered bread.

Normally food that is tasty is also bad for you but a full pack of this stew contains a measly 172 calories, less than 2% fat and provides two of your five a day portions of fruit and veg. At just 0.12g of sodium per 100g it also falls well below the 0.2g recomended we aim for by the dietician for a low sodium diet. It would be an ideal meal for someone on a diet especially as it is so filling.

Normally I find a downside for a product I review but I simply cant find fault with this. It's healthy, tasty, organic, low salt and well priced for a ready meal. As you can guess I'll be buying more of these in the future and will also be trying more food from the simply organics range when I see them.
