“ Brand: Tesco / Type: Other Ready Meals „
Of late I havent been very well and spent a lot of time resting up in bed. Being a single girl with family quite a distance from me I have been left fending for myself and so before I had a nasty test done in hospital that has left me virtually bed ridden I popped into my local Tesco store and got myself some ready meals that I could simply bung in the microwave and this was one of those as I love cauliflower cheese when my mum makes it so thought this may be the next best thig to that!
The meal comes in a dark blue and brown coloured box with a photograph of the Cauliflower cheese on the front it it and we are clearly told what it is and who it by and that it contains no artificial preservatives, flavours or colours, that it is suitable for Vegetarians, takes 11 minutes to cook in the microwave, weighs 400g and there is an at a glance nutritional chart show to then other information on the back of the box includes ingredients and allergy advice being given, freezing instructions and a full nutritional chart are shown and contact details for Tesco are given. The meal itself comes frozen in a large and deep black plastic container with a see through plastic lid to the top of it.
The Meal itself:
Well you can oven cook this or microwave it both ways from frozen and in the oven it takes between 45-50 minutes though my meal cooked in the microwave in 11 minutes flat with no fuss at all.
As I say the meal went in the microwave frozen, I popped the lid with a fork a few times and stirred it through halfway through its cooking time. It came out though not looking great and rather boring in fact and with lots of white sauce running all over the place.
I transferred the meal to a plate and the cauliflower was white and some bits were big, small small and it was all a bit soggy and mushy really with no bite to it at all and the whole thing didn't taste seasoned to me either. The cauliflower was almost swimming in the white sauce that there was simply too much of and I couldn't detect any flavour of cheese within this at all.
This wasn't the most awful meal I've ever had but I do think this would taste and look better if oven cooked as the sauce may set better and go a little browned and if you really want it taste better I do feel you should your own cheese to it as this seriously didn't taste of any cheese to me at all!
At only 245 calories per pack but with 10.8g of fat (7.1g of that is saturated fat by the way) I am sure though that the most of us can find a better, more tasty meal than this in Tesco so I don't recomend it sadly!
Only available in Tesco stores priced at around a pound a box.
Cauliflower cheese is a dish that my husband is absolutely keen on and it wasn't until a few months ago that I first made one myself. It is incredibly simple to make my own cauliflower cheese but this one is a good substitute for my own when I am very pushed for time when making dinner and want something very simple to put in the oven and just wait for!
This cauliflower cheese is available in the chilled section and can be heated in my microwave for 4 minutes which is fantastic. If I am less pushed for time then I will put this in the oven with whatever else I am cooking for dinner and then leave it for around 30 minutes. This starts to brown on the top and then I know that this is ready, I occasionally sprinkle a tad more grated cheese on the top to help give these the ultimate cheesy flavour.
I have cooked this both in the microwave and in the oven and I must say that the taste from the oven is favourable. This is just because the cauliflower is always soft all over and the sauce is hot and smooth throughout, also, the top layer goes lovely and brown which is great and tastes delicious.
Overall this is a fantastic treat in our house. This is high in calories at 185 calories, 12.6g of fat (6.3g of which saturates) but this is a teat that we would not eat every day or anything like that. The cauliflower is wonderfully soft, the sauce is mild and tasty and the cheese is strong without being overpowering. This cooks wonderfully well and both my husband and I love it. We had this recently with a joint of beef, roast potatoes and all the trimmings and this worked wonderfully well.
It's not very often I eat cauliflower cheese but when I do I always buy this Tesco one because it's loads better than my mum makes and she even admits it! lol
It comes chilled and takes about 30 mins to cook, if you leave it a bit longer the top will brown better but then you have to make sure you check it every minute because if you leave it even a minute too long the cauliflower will start drying up and the top will burn. You can nuke it in a couple of minutes but I've tried that and it makes the sauce go rubbery so I deffo recommend doing it in the oven if you've got time.
The cauliflower is cut up into just the right pieces so that they go nice and soft but not soggy. You can taste that the cauliflower is fresh and I like the way they have used a mild cheese sauce so that it doesn't over power the cauliflower. The top is sprinkled with mature cheese and that goes golden brown, that bit has got a strong cheese taste but it doesn't mess with the cauliflower too much because it's only a thin layer.
I think the sauce is wicked, it's got mustard in it but you can't taste that.... you can tell there is something different about it than just plain sauce but you'd never know it was mustard if you didn't read the box. The sauce goes wicked with the cauliflower and if you pick a bit out you can taste that the cheese flavour has gone into the cauliflower while it was cooking, that means the whole thing tastes of cheese but in a good way because it is so mild.
A 350g box costs £1.62, I've never been able to work out how many people this is supposed to serve though because it's a bit too much for me to eat on my own but it would be poxy little servings if you shared it.
I think it's delish and deffo recommend it to anyone who likes cauliflower cheese but can't be bothered to make it yourself!
