“ Brand: Tesco / Type: Frozen Food „
I didn't set out to purchase this item but it came to me in the way of a substitution when my online Tesco shop was delivered. I had ordered a branded Chicken and Mushroom slice but as this pack offered 2 slices, although smaller than a branded individual item, I decided to accept them. Packaging The slices come in a clear plastic tray with a clear wrapper containing all the information you need to know about the slices. Unfortunately neither of these things can be recycled in my area but the plastic tray can be recycled in some areas so worth checking. Nutritional information The first thing that caught my eye was the fat content 45% of your guideline daily amount in each slice. The salt content is also very high at 1.7g per slice. If I had seen this in store I think the fat content would have put me off buying it as I'm sure my normal branded one isn't that high. Storage These slices need to be refrigerated or frozen and eaten within one month. I only wanted to eat one of the slices so I popped the other one in a freezer bag to freeze for another meal. Preparation This slices can be hot or cold but I always eat my slices hot as I have them with potatoes and veg for my dinner rather than on their own as a snack. They only take 15-20 minutes to heat up in the oven or 25-30 minutes if you've frozen them and so I find them quick and easy to prepare. I'm usually busy with my toddler twins whilst trying to cook dinner so minimum preparation is the key for me. The slice I was pleasantly surprised by this slice. The puff pastry was light and didn't go hard at the ends like my usual branded slice. There wasn't a lot of chicken in the slice but the quality of it was good as I was a bit concerned when I read the ingredients which said Chicken Thigh as I'm not always a fan of thigh meat. The Chicken was British though which reassured me of the quality. There was plenty of mushrooms in the slice but the sauce didn't have the flavour of the slices I'm used to. Price These slices cost £1.35 which I think is reasonable. Would I recommend? Yes, if you aren't concerned about the fat and salt content then this is a tasty Chicken and Mushroom slice.
Tesco Value2 Chicken & Mushroom Slices 330g I am a huge fan of this type of guilty feeling food. Full of calories and when I buy a pack of two I will eat two. So I rarely buy them for that reason. But they do taste good. They are currently for sale for £1.18 in Tesco. That is only 59p each. Obviously not vegatarian. Ingredients------- Water, Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oil, Chicken (10%), Mushroom (7%), Single Cream (5%), Onion, Potato, Modified Maize Starch, Salt, Milk Proteins, Yeast Extract, Flavouring, Stabiliser (Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose),Cornflour, Glucose Syrup, Onion Powder, Dried Chicken, White Pepper Nutrional information-----per slice Calories 416Nutrition Carbs 35.7g Fat 25.7g I'm a big fan of pastries and often visit Greggs on my lunch break, so perfect I can buy these and heat them up on my lunch break. To cook them I usually microwave them. Which makes them soft and floppy. However they still taste great. The packet suggest cooking them in an oven for 20-25mins. I have never ate them as part of a meal with other food. But I would suggest sering them with vegtables or chips. When oven cooked the pasty is golden and flaky. I am suprised that for the price the product actually contains a fair amount of chickn and mushrooms, with the rest being filmed with a cream chicken tasting sauce. I love these slices, they taste fresh and addicting. Tesco do a range of other flavours as well which are worse trying. It depends what you like. I love the minced steak and onion.
As I have said in my previous opinions I am constantly on the look out for good nutritional meals that are reasonably priced, easy to prepare and dont contain artificial colours, flavours etc. I have to prepare lunch for mom and me each day as moms memory is so bad these days that she probably wouldnt be able to prepare a meal for herself any more, always assuming she remembered it was lunchtime! Some days I dont mind cooking, but sometimes I just want something quick and easy, especially if we have been out in the garden or for a walk into town and I dont have much time. I have noticed that a lot of the chilled meals in Tescos, whilst being good value have also started to sport a natty little red circle on the packaging, which states No artificial colours, flavours or hydrogenated fat. Now this is exactly the sort of thing that I am after. The one that I am going to tell you about today is Tesco Chicken and Mushroom Slices. The slices are sold in 330g packs containing two slices and are ready to eat as they are delicious hot or cold. They cost £1.19 per pack and occasionally they have BOGOF offers (buy one get one free) so that makes for a real bargain! The slices are packed in a plastic container which is then contained within a see through plastic outer sleeve both of which are recycleable so they go straight into the plastic recycling bag! The fact that the outer sleeve is see through means that it is easy to see the product inside and that it is big enough, with vegetable accompaniment, to make a meal for two people. The outer wrapper has the Tesco logo together with the Union Flag and the words British chicken. The description of the slices is Tender pieces of chicken and mushrooms in a light rich creamy sauce wrapped in light puff pastry. As I said earlier one of the other things on the front of the pack is the red circle promising that it contains no artificial flavours, colours or hydrogenated fat. As with other Tesco foods there is also information about the calorie, sugar, salt, fat and saturates content in grams per pack and as a percentage of an average adult daily allowance. On the reverse of the sleeve is all the usual information about how to cook the meal by conventional oven. Being in a pastry case it is not suitable for cooking using the microwave remember to allow a bit extra cooking time if you have frozen the item though! It does tell you to defrost the item thoroughly for 12 hours before cooking but I have cooked mine straight from the freezer with no ill effects. There is also a list of ingredients nutrition, allergy advice and the Tesco promise of satisfaction or a full refund. I found this product in the chiller section at Tescos but it suitable for home freezing which is what I did. So all this information is fine but its all useless if the taste is no good isnt it? We decided to have ours hot with mixed vegetables. I have to say I havent actually tried eating one cold so I cant tell you what that tastes like. To prepare it for conventional cooking I just had to remove the outer plastic sleeve and place the slices on a baking tray. It didnt stretch my culinary talents too much! It would have taken 15 -20 minutes in the oven on 200 degrees if they had been used from chilled but, as I had frozen ours, they took 25 30 minutes to cook. Obviously you need to check that it is hot all the way through before serving. As they were cooking the smell coming from the kitchen was lovely. To serve I just placed one slice on each place together with some mixed vegetables. The pastry looked lovely, golden brown and flaky, just the way we like it. When I cut into the slice the filling looked really creamy with plenty of chicken and mushrooms. The taste was no disappointment either! The sauce was creamy without being heavy and the chicken pieces were lovely and tender (no rubbish in here) with the mushrooms complementing the taste. The pastry is really light and flaky and tastes home made. The size of the slice was plenty big enough to make a filling meal for one with the addition of the vegetables. All in all I would recommend this product without hesitation weve already had at least five lots and will be buying more! Incidentally they also do ham and cheese and minced beef and onion fillings as well as the chicken and mushroom.
