“ Brand: Tesco / Type: Frozen Food „
I really do need to exercise more frequently and at the same time improve my diet because I eat far too much fast food or junk which I consider microwaveable meals to be even if they are not quite as bad as a McDonalds or a KFC. The latest ready meal I consumed was a Cottage Pie manufactured by Tesco which I purchased for two pounds. For one of these meals in a plastic tray weighing 450g I thought the price to be fairly competitive.
A Cottage Pie is of course a bed of minced beef in gravy which is covered with mashed potato and this ready prepared version is the same and it was ready after eight minutes with a couple of minutes standing time. You can often heat these from frozen but I usually just put mine in the microwave straight from chilled. The packaging makes the statement that British Beef is used in the preparation of this product and that there are no artificial, colours or preservatives to be found in it.
The calorie content is 395 and fat stands at 15.4g which doesn't seem awful. This was hot when I started to eat it which is always important to ensure when making use of microwaveable items like these. The mince had a nice texture to it and the gravy was reasonably thick, dark in colour and was really very pleasant. Even though I made sure the product was well heated the mashed potato on the top did not become crispy or burnt at all and still had some fluffiness to it and so really complemented the mince with the gravy perfectly. I really did like this meal and it was filling enough to be eaten by itself without additions.
Considering the cost and the preparation time this Cottage Pie comes recommended from me and is another good ready meal from Tesco but I don't think any of these microwaveable offerings compare to a home cooked version or one that has been made in a restaurant from scratch.
This is by far the best cottage pie microwave meal I've ever had. It looks great with its piped mashed potato on top and lovely think gravy mince underneath. The potatoes are a nice texture and the flavour of the mince is lovely.
With a lot of microwave meals it never seems to looks the same as the picture on the front of the packaging once cooked and served up. However with this meal, I find it does look very presentable and can be transferred to a plate without it becoming a mushed up mess. The piped mashed potato stays quite firmly in place on top of the mince. Also the gravy is quite thick so holds the mice well together underneath.
This is a very satisfying meal for 1. As I'm not a big eater I sometimes just heat half of it and store the rest in a container in the fridge for another day. This keeps perfectly fine. This is an excellent meal for the cost of it.
One thing I was also going to miss moving away from home is my Dad's home made cottage pie, and subsequently I needed to replace it somehow! Ready meals are the obvious answer for a student who's cooking abilities aren't too scratch therefore Tesco's standard quality cottage pie is my alternative.
Tesco's cottage pie is widely available throughout it's different types of Tesco store i.e. Express, Extra and when it's not on offer it often retails at £2.00 a pack, or quite often it works out at 3 for £5 which you can mix and match with selected other ready meals. Currently until the 14th of April, it's on offer at just £1.00 per pack which therefore is a perfect opportunity to sample it a cheap price if you haven't done so before!
Once you get to the actual meat through the layers of mashed potato it's very delicious especially if you mix it up. There used to be an equal mix of meat and potato but once VAT increased they took out a little beat of meat in order to compensate for the increase and be able to still sell the ready meal for £2.00, therefore in my opinion they've somewhat made it worse, but while it's on offer at £1.00 per pack, it's definitely worth every penny! The meat and potato are of expected quality, yes it tastes better homemade but for a ready meal this isn't bad at all, especially as I always microwave it. As a student I don't quite have the patience to cook it in the oven, I want it there and then!
The packaging can be somewhat misleading as it shows a fair amount of meat in the actual pie but you'll be disappointed after cooking it to find somewhat less meat than you might expect, but it's probably for the reasons above, so blame the government, not Tesco's! As is compulsary with most Tesco products it has a daily guideline on the packaging outlining how much fat and salt etc. the cottage pie contains.
Overall I would certainly recommend this to anyone, especially while it's on offer at such a cheap price. Definitely worth a buy. For something that I often microwave it does come out very well and smells so gorgeous when you pull away the film lid. Obviously it's very hot when you open it but let it cool or if you can be as impatient with me as food keep blowing it to enjoy the delicious taste!
