Tesco Italian Spagetti Carbonara
Advantages: Great Price, Enough For One!
Disadvantages: So Much Cheese!
I don't eat cheese, I don't drink milk and I can't stomach cream, but I have a thing for Carbonara and this Tesco Italian Spaghetti Carbonara has three cheeses, milk and double cream in!
My boyfriend introduced me to Spaghetti Carbonara before he knew about all the things I couldn't/shouldn't eat and since then it's been one of those meals which I like even though I know it doesn't like me.
Tonight was fireworks night and dinner was meant to be the burger bar, but as the queue was so huge I made a pit-stop to Tesco Express on the walk home. This ready meal was in the chilled section and was on offer for any 3 for £5 - bargain - but I only needed one and so instead I paid £1.87.
The meal serves one and is packaged in a black tray with plastic film on top, slotted into a cardboard sleeve. The sleeve is a nice green colour, it's attractive in that it's bright and light looking. The sleeve boasts an improved recipe but I couldn't comment on that, it also says that there is a good source of protein.
I opted to microwave my meal because I had just 5 minutes until X-Factor and also my oven sets the heat alarm off. So, 4.5 minutes in the microwave with a pierced lid later, and I have my Carbonara. (If you prefer to oven cook you need 15-20minutes on 190 degrees of gas mark 5 - or 30-35minutes from frozen).
The meal is layered, so the pasta isn't visible in its tray, the ham/bacon is plentiful but the cheese sauce is providing a pool for the contents to swim in. As I don't eat cheese I poured some of the sauce away, there just was too much for my liking. However, on putting it all in my bowl and mixing it up I still felt I had too much sauce - it was dripping from my spaghetti.
The pasta was a brilliant texture - none of it went hard unlike some pasta does in the microwave, and I think this was to do with the fact it was kept moist by the sauce when being nuked.
Time for the taste test and yes it's cheesy. The sauce is made of Mature Cheddar, Parmesan and Pecorino Cheese and it has an odd texture that meant when I ran my tongue over my teeth they felt unclean and like they needed brushing.
The ham/bacon pieces were, as I said, plentiful, but also dull. They had no taste and felt like I was chewing cardboard. I really didn't enjoy the meat part of this mean. The bacon is smoked and makes up 9% of the meal. Personally I felt there was more and I couldn't taste the smokiness.
The portion was a good size, I couldn't eat it all but then I never do. There is definitely enough to fill you up but if you chose to add a side such as garlic bread you would definitely have a dipping sauce at the end to mop up.
Overall this is a cheap ready meal and it far outweighed my expectations. I wouldn't buy it again due to the meat factor. For me it tastes a bit like spaghetti in a cheese sauce.
But I would recommend this if you like cheese.
The sleeve is recyclable and has information such as this is nut-free, as is the factory it was made in, but there can be no guarantee that the ingredients haven't come into contact with nuts. It also clearly states that it contains milk, wheat and gluten.
This product can be frozen but should be used within 1 month of purchase.
(The packaging has been updated from that in the Dooyoo picture & it wasn't me who spelt Spaghetti wrong in the product title it was dooyoo)
