      Disadvantages

      Value Bolognese

      Tesco Value are known to be products that are classed as no frills. I found the Tesco Value product for an amazing 44p and after being quite satisfied with the Tesco value lasagne, I thought why not.

      The spaghetti is packaged in a typical Tesco Value style box and within the box is the spaghetti in a microwaveable and slightly bland plastic bag split into two - one for the spaghetti and the other for the bolognese. The instructions tell you to pierce the bags a little and microwave. Based on my microwave, I had to heat these two bags for about 7 and a half minutes, which I put on a plate before doing so.

      After the seven minutes the bags were pretty hot and I had to try and transfer them onto the plate without any hot steam getting to my hands. It was quite an effort actaully and I ended up using a spatula to help me.

      I pierced holes in the middle of the bags not thinking about how I would empty the contents. This should probably be stated on the instructions. I emptied the bags and had a reasonable but maybe not enough amount of spaghetti bolognese on my plate.

      Upon eating the spaghetti bolognese, I found that I really really liked it. Shame about the portion size. Its not tiny or anything, but doesnt exactly fill you up properly. Thats a big flaw of this product, but at 44p can yu really complain? The taste of the spaghetti pasta was spot on the bolognese had a good amount of meat included. The proportion of spaghetti compared to the bolognese was also spot on. No spaghetti or bolognese left over.

      As mentioned, the priced of this product is its biggest advantage. The taste of this product is nice, just the portion size I would criticise about. I would recommend this product, but maybe buy 2 if you are hungry as one may not do.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Probably the best ready you can get for under 50p!

        I bought this the other day simply because of the price, I couldn't believe you could get a meal for 44p! (The 44p bolognese is in the freezer section, they do a slightly more expensive chilled one) I fed to my kids the other night for supper as it was quick and we didn't have much else in.

        ~~~Packaging~~~
        This comes in the traditional boring and unappetising Tesco value packaging. But I don't mind, I don't plan on eating the box and for 44p, who cares what it looks like!
        ~~~Ingredients and Nutrition~~~
        This is actually surprisingly healthy, with only 320 calories and 8.6g of fat (not a lot for a ready meal) so would be ok for someone on a diet. The ingredients list reads pretty much like a homemade bolognese, no E numbers, additives etc, just food! I didn't feel at all bad about feeding this to my young children.

        Cooked Spaghetti (43%), Tomato Purée, EU Beef (9%), Onion, Beef Fat, Sugar, Wheat Flour, Cornflour, Beef Stock, Garlic Purée, Barley Malt Extract, Oregano Leaves, Basil.

        As you can see, the meat content is very low but you get what you pay for as they say.

        ~~~Preparation~~~
        This bolognese comes in two joined bags rather than a box and can be either boiled in the bag or microwaved. I chose to microwave as I have one and the boil method takes so long you may as well make a bolognese from scratch!
        It looks like a very small amount, but it is vacuum packed.
        ~~~The eating experience~~~
        When you (carefully) cut this meal out of its packaging there is a lot more food than you'd think - not a huge portion and you'd still need some bread and butter to make a dinner out of it - and it is more than enough to feed two toddlers.
        The smell is appetising enough, a lot of microwave food smells horrible but you can tell this has tomatoes in and it does smell like food.
        The taste is not as bad as I expected, considering the price, slightly sweet and not very meaty but definitely edible. I could eat a whole one of these easily.
        My two boys finished this happily and they are fussy eaters, so I think that speaks for its self.

        If I had paid £2 for this I would be giving it 2 or 3 stars but for 44p it gets the full 5!
