Uncle Ben's Express Egg Fried Rice
Advantages: Tastes great; easy to cook
Disadvantages: Pricey unless on special offer
I absolutely love rice. I have to say, its rare for me to buy Uncle Bens rice... this has nothing to do with the quality, as the quality is very good. Its all about prices for me these days. Therefore I usually now stick to buying Supermarkets own brand quick cook long grain rices.
However, every now and again I will buy Savoury type packet rices and my partner often buys the Uncle Bens express rices. He tells me that the reason he does this is because he is no good at cooking rice! This means that whenever I'm at his it is either a case of me making the rice or us eating Uncle Bens Express rices.
In regard to Uncle Bens Express Egg Fried rice; I have to say, it really is good; and well, talk about easy to cook. It couldn't be easier. All you need to do is tear the top off the bag, so its slightly open; pop it in the microwave for 2 minutes and voila.... Its cooked!!
You can also cook it in boiling water, which takes 3 minutes simmering; but microwaving it is easier.
I like the packaging on this product. Its in a thick plastic type packet The colouring is mainly orange/yellows. There is a picture of a bowl of the Egg fried rice with a pair of chopsticks on the side of the bowl of rice. There is a picture of what looks like a sort of Chinese temple in the corner; so the packaging is sort of oriental, going in line with what the product is.
Each packet has 250g contents. I would say that this is just about enough for 2 people. In saying that, I usually like to have a lot of rice and so I think it would be better if there were slightly more.
Uncle Bens state that their rice is 'Perfect every time' which I have to admit, it really is. There are some great flavours which come out in this Egg Fried Rice; You can taste a hint of garlic and ginger and all the spices and ingredients combined form a wonderful flavoured rice. There are small bits of the egg in the rice and in my view, this is a very decent egg fried rice.
You could have this rice with loads of different meats and fish. It doesn't just have to be used when you eat Chinese food for example. It would go well with Pork , Beef and Chicken (Probably cooked in slices or chopped small). Myself and my partner eat the rice with Pork or Beef usually.
Steamed long grain rice (81%)
Egg scrambled (whole egg, whole milk, water, rapseed oil, cornflour, lemon juice concentrate, salt, white pepper (9%)
Toasted sesame oil
Roasted Onion paste (onions, sunflower oil, salt)
*There are no Artificial colours, flavours or preservatives in this product*
There are 123 kcals in each 125g serving
*No allergy advice is given concerning the product but it would be a no, no for anyone with egg/milk allergy*.
There are loads of other varieties available ;
Tomato & Basil
Special Fried Rice
Wholegrain Mediterranean Vegetable
Long Grain wild Rice
Basmati & Thai
I intend trying some of the above! I particularly like the sound of The Tandoori and Tomato & Basil varieties.
Uncles Bens Express Rices usually cost around £1.70 each. I really think this is quite expensive. However, Tesco currently have a good deal on where you can buy 3 x 250g packets for £3.00 mix & match.
I certainly recommend you try this rice out; its quick to cook, tastes great and currently on special offer. So, what are you waiting for!!
