Weight Watchers Chicken Curry
Advantages: Quck, easy, low calorie, nice rice
Disadvantages: Not much chicken, sauce lacks flavour of spices
I do not buy ready meals on a regular basis but do like to have a couple in the freezer for a quick meal in hurry or if I find myself alone for dinner. Whilst shopping in Iceland recently I noticed that the frozen Weight Watchers ready meals from Heinz were on a special offer so thought a I could pop a couple in my freezer for a rainy day. One that I did purchase was a chicken curry, although the picture on the front did not look overly appetizing I do like curry and thought it may taste better than it looked.
As stated I purchased this weight watchers chicken curry from Iceland with it being priced at just £1.25 or if you purchased 3 meals from quite a large selection then they were on a multi-buy offer for £3.00 making them just £1.00 per meal.
The chicken curry came packaged in a small rectangle cardboard box which is purple in colour and has a picture of the curry on the front served on a plate. Also on the front of the box is the weight watchers logo and also the calorie content of the mea (296 Kcal) l and how many pro-pints it contains (8 pro-points). I personally am not following the weight watchers diet but for anyone who is then it makes it quick and easy to see how many points is contained in the meal without really even having to pick up the box. On the sides and back of the box you can find all the other information about the meal including ingredients listings, full nutritional information, allergy advice and cooking instructions. When you open the box you will find the curry contained in a small plastic tray inside with a peel able clear plastic lid. The curry and the rice is all contained in the one plastic container with now centre divide as due to it being a frozen meal it does to an extend stay where it is placed.
You can cook the curry in the microwave or in the oven, I chose to cook mine in the microwave. This was very quick and easy to do by simply piercing the film lid on the black tray then cooking for 6mins 30 seconds on full power and then 4 minutes on defrost. I have a 800W microwave and these cooking times worked perfectly well to ensure the curry was piping hot throughout. Now I was very lazy and simply ate my meal from the container but it would have been very easy to simply transfer it to a plate or dish.
The portion size with this curry is not huge as you can imagine from a diet meal but it is an adequate size to put your hunger at bay. When I sat down to eat the curry I was quite looking forward to it as it smelt lovely a little like Chinese curry which I love, but I was a little surprised to find only 3 pieces of chicken breast contained within the sauce especially as they were fairly small pieces too. The sauce itself was a brown/yellow colour and had a nice consistency and was not too runny and I could see pieces of tomato in the sauce. The taste of the sauce was a little disappointing, it is a mild curry as described on the box but the taste is simply of curry powder and not of any spices even though I can see from the ingredients listings that they are present. The rice was much better and was cooked perfectly without being sticky or mushy and there was just the right amount to go with the sauce.
Overall for the cost of this meal I do not think there is much to grumble about. It would be nice to have a couple more pieces of chicken in the sauce and to be able to distinguish more of the spices but this is by far not the worst curry I have eaten and for a quick, easy, low calorie meal I would probably purchase it again in the future.
Summary: A quick, healthy meal in a hurry.
