If only there was no sugar in the sauce.

Generally in the evenings the supermarkets will slash the prices of many products that expire on that day. These tend to be the short life products that people don't buy and then it comes close to expiring. Well my mum went the other day to get some bread as there wasn't any left and bread is essential in lunchboxes. She saw this weight watchers pasta for 25p and normally it costs £2.50. I wouldn't pay this much for it unless I really like it.

This is pasta with a tomato sauce and Mediterranean vegetables like courgettes, red and yellow peppers. I love pasta with Mediterranean style vegetables and I have tried the Dolmio sauce with Mediterranean vegetables so I was expecting a similar taste. The pasta is penne but it looks smaller and there is no side cut at the end so the pasta looks like a tube rather than penne. The pasta makes up 24% of the meal and is made from drum wheat semolina and egg white. Chopped tomatoes accounts for a quarter of the meal and the vegetables account for 22% of the meal which is the perfect amount. The rest of the ingredients are flavourings.
      Ingredients
Chopped Tomatoes (25%), Cooked Pasta (24%) (Durum Wheat Semolina, Water, egg Albumen), Water, Onion (6%), Red Pepper (6%), Yellow Peppers (6%), Courgette (4%), White Wine (Contains Preservative E220), Garlic Puree, Tomato Puree, Carrot Concentrate, Modified Maize Starch, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Basil, Low Sodium Sea Salt With Minerals, Green Chillies, Celeriac Concentrate, Lettuce Concentrate, Chilli Powder, Red Beetroot Concentrate, Black Pepper, Parsley, Acidity Regulator (Citric Acid), Spinach.

The cardboard cover is taken off and then the plastic cover is pierced with a fork 3-4 times. It is cooked in the microwave for 2 minutes and then shaken and left for another 2 minutes. Leave to stand for 1.5 minutes before eating. The timing varies depending on microwave settings but these are given on the back of the box. I found that I was left with a quite a lot of sauce and I thought that some of the water would have been absorbed by the pasta but it was more like soup with pasta. The pasta was cooked really well and it wasn't even slightly raw. I don't mind if pasta is undercooked and anyway it is much healthier that way because there is less sugar content. The sauce tasted very sweet and the vegetables were soggy and very bland. The sweetness in the sauce was really overpowering so I couldn't finish eating everything. I ate the pasta and some vegetables but the rest was chucked. If the sauce had more flavour and much less sugar it would have tasted better. I also found that there wasn't as much pasta as I thought there would be.

263 calories for this is really good given that pasta is high in calories. 14g of sugar which is partly due to the pasta is quite high. 0.8g of saturated fat is really low for a meal so there is room for desert. 6.4g of fibre which helps to keep a strong gut. 0.36g of salt is very low, especially for a ready meal.

Overall this is a very healthy and potentially filling meal. The only problem is that I don't have a sweet tooth and this was too sweet for me.

A yummy ready meal from Weight Watchers

I'm a huge Weight Watchers fan, over the years I have had great weight loss results. Although I do not attend the classes no more due to the cost I still keep the point system up at home. One thing that really helps me is purchasing their ready made meals, as they are already pointed.

Weight Watchers Mediterranean Vegetable Pasta - 400g:

'Penne pasta covered in a rich tomato and basil sauce with tasty chucks of onion, courgette and red and yellow pepper'

When it comes to Weight Watchers ready made meals I normally find them hit or miss, thankfully for me this one was a complete hit! Tasty, fast and easy to prepare what more could you want?

        My Findings:

Normally I always opt to cook my meals in the oven they seem to taste better that way rather than microwaving them. However I was rather hungry and decide to just pop this meal into the microwave to cook - lazy me!

Whilst cooking you could already smell the rich tomato sauce and it smelt delicious, once the meal was ready to eat I poured it out into a bowl. It looked nice and colourful too with the mix of peppers and courgettes within the meal. The pasta was nice looking plumped and very soft which was a surprise as I find sometimes pasta can go rubbery when microwaved.

My first bite I found the tomato sauce to have a little spicy kick with an aftertaste of a hint of basil to it; the pasta just melted within your mouth and there was a really good amount of vegetables. For once this was a Weight Watchers meal that filled me up after eating; I found there was no needing to have anything on the side with this one.

The vegetable were soft also and full of flavour, you could taste each vegetable they didn't all blend into one taste as they do with some meals. If I were to serve this to a friend I doubt they would have guessed it's a fast food product. It tasted fresh very flavoursome and one I shall be having again.

Weight Watchers packaging seems to be getting boring though, this one has a cardboard sleeve which inside has the plastic tray and film lid. All of which can be recycled.

        How to cook:

Remember to pierce film lid before cooking.

Oven - 190c (Fan 170c) for 25 to 30 minutes if cooking from frozen 45 to 50 minutes.

Microwave - 2 minutes, then shake and cook for a further 2 minutes. If cooking from frozen 4 ½ minutes, shake then cook for a further 4 ½ minutes.

        Price and Availability:

I purchased mine from Tesco's as they had a promotional offer for only £1.18 normally price will be £2.37, also Sainsbury's have these on offer to for only £1.50.

        Nutritional Information:

        Fat - 3.2g
        Saturates - 0.8g

        Weight Watcher Points = 7

        Suitable for vegetarians

        Allergy Advice:

Contains Celery, Celeriac, Durum wheat semolina, Wheat, Eggs, Egg Albumen & Sulphites

        Overall:

For a ready meal this one for me really comes up trumps, it has a lovely freshly made taste, low in fat and is very satisfying. Also for me the convenience of it some of you will know I have problems with my knees and some days I can hardly stand so this is a great help for me.

Five out of five stars from me.

        Thanks for reading :o)

        Additional Information:

This meal can be found within the chiller section but can also be frozen. Keep refrigerated below 5c.
As many of you will know about Weight Watchers but just incase - Weight Watchers is a point system eating plan which I have found very easy to follow so far. You are allocated so many points per day, and everything food/drink wise has a point value. Your aim is not to go over your set points!

Incase you would like to find more out about Weight Watchers they have a very handy and useful website.
