Advantages: tasty, interesting to look at, already portioned so you can't kid yourself
Disadvantages: A bit too pureed for everyones liking in my house
I could eat mashed potato every day and not get bored, so i would describe myself as a bit of a fanatic. It has to be tasty, it has to be a bit creamy, and must look good.
For this reason, i normally avoid products that are not a potato, a bit of butter and a bit of milk, along with a bit of effort. My usual thought is that the ready made options unless it is the sort of top end of the market product are an absolute waste of space in my house.
I am not following weightwatchers but have done in the past, so the first thing that struck me is that the portion of mashed potato is only 2 points. To me that seemed pretty good. For this, you could have 3 patties of mashed potato that was liberally mixed with spring greens. The frozen pieces in themselves did not look overly attractive or have a particular smell, but i felt a bit inspired today to serve as a pie topping to my family as i had a bag, and not enough time to peel enough spuds.
There were 2 options in how to prepare it. You can microwave it for a couple of minutes, stir and serve. That sounds a nice easy option. You can also heat them gently on the hob. This is the option i went for today. It worked quite well but as i had a large family sized portion i found that it was sticking onto the bottom of my pan quite badly cooking it this way. I am likely to microwave it in future as i am not fond of pan scrubbing.
As it cooked, it began to look a lot nicer. It is not really mash though. It is more like a potato puree. I can never get my potato to go as smooth as this from a hand masher. It also had a pleasing amount of spring greens. Not enough to put the kids off when i served it, but enough to give it a visual enhancement and enough to taste.
When it came to the taste test, i really liked it. It is not mashed potato, but it is a very good substitute for a meal accompaniment. I also found that it was a good portion size for the number of points. Because it had the lovely taste from the spring greens i would happily be satisfied with the smaller portion.
The kids also liked it, which to be honest did surprise me, but again, i think it looked and tasted good. My husband was less keen. He ate it but didn't like how pureed it was.
In summary, it is a decent product from an established range. I find sometimes the savoury meals are not as good as the sweet range. However, this was something i liked and would definitely buy again. It might even help me lose a bit of the weight i keep threatening to get rid of.
It contains only what it should - potato, semi-skimmed milk, spring onions, butter, salt and pepper. And for only 79 calories for a 100g portion, then i might also have a space for a weightwatchers pudding.
Summary: A good product that can be used for the whole family if you want to
