I'm not mad keen on a lot of Weight Watchers meals but Cool Trader by me has started selling their Taste Temptations range for £1.29 and that's about £1.00 cheaper than in the supermarkets. I got one of these Tender Steak And Mushrooms With Potatoes to try because I am trying to eat a bit healthier in the run up to Xmas, knowing I'm going to make a proper hog of myself next week! lol
It was delish, not restaurant quality like Weight Watchers say this range will be but loads better than most of their boring meals.
You get loads of potatoes and they're cut into little squares. You can nuke the meal or do it in the oven but I reckon it's best done in the oven because the potatoes go lovely and crispy but stay soft in the middle. I reckon this meal is perfect for people who are on a diet because when you put salt and vinegar on the potatoes they taste a bit like chippy chips!
There's more steak in in than I thought there would be and it's proper tender, I enjoyed the meat in it big time. It's cut into thin strips and not the chunks you can see in the photograph Dooyoo have got up, you can tell it's good quality meat and tastes nice and beefy.
The potatoes and steak come in a very pale gravy that has got a few peppercorns in it, there's also quite a few mushrooms mixed in with the steak but I think they've done that for flavour and not to make it look like there's more meat in it. The gravy is yummy, I thought it was going to be bland and horrible because it's a pale beige colour but it's dead rich and goes with the meat and potatoes perfect.
I love how the gravy coats the potatoes because it's quite thick, it's not madly sticky like a lot of Weight Watchers gravys and I think it's as close to perfect as a frozen ready meal can get.
Each meal has got less than 400 calories and if you're on Weight Watchers it's 6 1/2 points. That doesn't mean anything to me but I think this meal is mega filling and will help you stick to your diet because it tastes so yummy. There's obviously loads more potatoes than steak but they're cooked so good and are so tasty that it doesn't matter and it doesn't feel like Weight Watchers have added more of the cheaper ingredients because there's still enough meat in the meal to satisfy you.
I am still trying to get through the contents of my freezer in readiness for defrosting, so last nights dinner was a Weight Watchers ready meal which has been in there for some time.
The Weight Watchers Tender Steak meal, from their Taste Temptations range, is much nicer than I imagined it would be and made for a satisfying dinner which was flavoursome and interesting.
The full moniker for this meal is Taste Temptations Tender Steak In A Creamy Peppercorn And Onion Sauce With Golden Crispy Potatoes, which is a bit of a mouthful so I shall just call it Tender Steak as I think this sums up the meal perfectly.
There isn't very much steak at all in the meal, and that is the only downfall to it. On my plate were seven or eight bite sized chunks of steak which were all extremely lean and cooked to perfection, ending up surprisingly tender with not an ounce of fat or gristle on any of the meat.
The crispy potatoes are much more in abundance, making up for I'd say 75% of the meal. I would ordinarily be complaining about this, Weight Watchers taking out much of the delicious steak and replacing it with potatoes, however golden and crispy they are. However, these potatoes are delicious. I liberally sprinkled mine with salt and vinegar and they are absolutely lovely, very hearty tasting with a taste of real potatoes rather than the flash frozen potato rubbish from McCain and other such companies.
The peppercorn sauce is really more of a gravy in my opinion, and very nice it is too. There is very little in the way of peppercorn flavour, but it's a meaty and creamy sauce which I really enjoyed. It goes equally well with the steak and potatoes, in fact stirring the potatoes into the sauce gives them a rich and even more delicious flavour and also makes them more tender as they soak up the sauce.
I served my Tender Steak meal with a portion of boiled cauliflower and some nice green beans as, like all Weight Watchers meals, I felt it needed bulking out and I also like to include some vegetables with every meal. However, this meal was fairly filling on its own and I think my appetite would have been satisfied even without the extra veg.
There are 7 points in this meal which isn't bad considering it's a complete meal once paired with some zero point vegetables, and this is roughly what I allow myself each day for my main meal. For those of you not following the Weight Watchers plan, each 360g meal contains 398 calories and 5g of saturated fat, which is very good compared to an equivalent ready meal in the Birds Eye range.
I paid £2.69 for this meal from Tesco, but my niece has since seen them in Farmfoods priced at £1.50 so if you live near one of these freezer shops then I'd recommend you look in here before shelling out on supermarket prices. I'll definitely buy this meal again as it's handy for quickness and a very nice ready meal indeed.
