Advantages: price, location
Disadvantages: poor after care, build quality
We moved into our new Barratt home in Bonnybridge Scotland in May '03, and the snagging list was quite significant. Mostly poor workmanship on the part of the Sub Contractors - over whom Barratt seem to excercise no quality control.
The most significant were:- Marble Fire surround broken in half and glued with yellow glue, electric supply duct to detached garage broken/blocked- this took three attempts to rectify, eventually a new section of duct was put in. light fittings faulty - not working, a kitchen worktop which has taken 7 months to replace, En-suite shower leaking through the mains powered smoke detector in the hall (onto our new laminate flooring); this took four attempts to fix, what was basically an incorrect initial installation. Like other entries on this site, the after care is grudging and without any apology.
Most seriously however was the fact that on new years eve, four ridge tiles were blown off. This was after Barratts bodgers had been to "repair" missing mortar.
My wife and I had to take a new build (fixed price) in Scotland, due to the unacceptable alternative. Our southern colleagues do not have this rather unfair system of house purchase.
We are happy with the price and location, but feel that in any other walk of life, when you spend £150,000 you should expect quality not something out of diy disasters
