Why don't estate agents help??? (Estate Agents in general)

Why don't estate agents bother to help you when you are in the process of moving?

Me and my family recently put our house on the market. We had a buyer which met the asking price within 2 weeks so we went on about 8 estate agents mailing lists.

We asked them to send us through things that needed work doing on them.
We had given them a maximum price and about 7 areas in which we wanted to move to.

Week after week they sent us through things which were either fully furnished, wrong area or too expensive.

They were sending us things which were next to the river and costing about £500,000 - £750,000.

Why can they just not help a little bit.
Just a bit of time and effort would have probably got them a sale because we were eager to move.

It just makes me wonder why they are in the job if they cannot do it properly.
