Advantages: none
Disadvantages: you'd better read the list
1. Foxtons charge over £300 for a'watertight' tenancy agreement that you can download from a web site for £30.
2. Foxtons take ALL their commission charges for the duration on the tenancy agreement out of the incoming rent UP FRONT. This means that if the tenants stop paying rent and you have to evict you will then face a battle to get anything out of Foxtons. So, let's say you rent your flat and the tenant signs a 3 year agreement. After three months you haven't seen any money, Foxtons have it all. The tenant stops paying, Foxtons have their money and you've got nothing besides all the trouble of eviction. And then Foxtons kindly offer to
provide you with a solicitor at great expense. So they make a killing whatever happens!
3. Foxtons DO NOT run credit checks on tenants. Why? Because they don't care and they win however the tenants behave. Foxtons will get ANY tenants in that have paid the deposit and the first months rent (that's all that matters because that's how they get their commission). If the tenant defaults after that they will keep the deposit to cover their charges and you will get nothing.
YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME? Well this is the situation I'm in now.
4. When things go wrong Foxtons will accept ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING except of course, taking your money. And they're very good at this. You will pay for eviction and they very kindly suggest you use one of their solicitors for the job. So when you're down they kick you.
Then when all is sorted out (which it is most certainly not in my case) they kndly offer to provide you with cleaning services to clean up the mess their terrible tenants have left behind.
5. Foxtons cover themselves by sending you copies of the 'references' they got for the clients. And yes, because
you're too busy to check them you don't bother. After all that's what you paid the professionals for isn't it??
Then when the tenants turn out to be crooks, its YOUR FAULT because YOU signed the papers!! This is what they actually told me!!
I'm still in this battle with Foxtons and its been over a month now. I've two flats and two sets of tenants have been a nightmare. After 4 months in Foxtons control I've not seen a single penny. In fact I believe I'm still in their debt!!
They have lost me £10k. I'm not making this up.
PLEASE DON'T USE THEM.
In case you have any doubts about the validity of my experiences, here are some official stories about Foxtons in the press in case you missed the incredible documentary job done on them recently.
from the BBC: more police investigation after this shocking
programme.

From The Times: Foxtons waged a turf war which they ADMITTED to where they sent out teams to rip down other estate agents
FOR SALE signs!!

they're at it overseas too!

this is just the tip of the iceberg. Anyone out there have
similar stories? Put them here. I intend to build a web page
dedicated to making people aware of these criminals. Yes, they
are criminals (not all of them) but Foxtons admitted to breaking the law. I'll list all the horror stories I can find. This business must have regulation. They are out of control.
Summary: All you need to know about Foxtons practices and why you should AVOID them.

- 11/02/07 I disagree. Firstly I am not waging a war on Foxtons. I describe in detail the way they they operate with supporting evidence. I have not been censored by dooyoo and see nothing in my review that does not comply with their mandate:
" ;dooyoo members can even write their own product and service reviews to share with other consumers"
I wrote a review of a service (if you can call it that - dis-service is more accurate).
Yes . You're right. Foxtons are not the only one. But read those articles. Foxtons began the board wars.
Perhaps I was wrong to try and gain information from others via this site to wage my so called 'war'. But any argument worth its salt must have supporting evidence and believe me I have found piles. If I can prevent one person from getting involved with Foxtons by my review then it will have been worthwhile.
An d by the way. Wars are waged with guns and tanks, not with the constructive collection of information and the presentation of evidence via a site designed for that purpose.
Why don't you try renting your flat with them? |

- 21/06/06 contrary to the view / comment below, i think this site is about sharing consumer experiences which is what you have done here. i have no personal experience of foxtons but i have heard the horror stories first hand and i think there is some good advice here. |

- 21/06/06 I am not sure that an opinion site like dooyoo is the place to wage a war against a particular business. I read all the articles, and none of them really tell about the problems you seem to have encountered. I know from past experience for example that moving opposing estate agents boards is not confined to Foxtons, and that many estate agents have the same tactics. Had you clearly stated exactly what your experience was without trying to gain information on this website, then the review would have been a good one and justified, although waging a war on a site like this isn't really what the site is here for. |
