George Wimpey are anbsolute pile of pants. We bought our house 2 yrs ago, the house itself is three years old. It has had some slight settlement cracks which are covered under guarantee with the NHBC and work is due to be carried out. We have tried to sell our house but cannot do anything untill the work has been completed. The work was meant to be done at the start of the summer....... then the start of September........... then the end of September.............then the end of October. Now we have found out that Wimpey are not happy with the price they have been quoted so the work is going out for re tender, meaningwe will have to wait another 6 - 12 months before we can do anything. Wimpey do not care one little bit but due to job relocation we are stuckm with a huge mortgage and a house we cannot live in because it is 100 miles away from where we now work! If anyone has a similar problem please leave comments!!

Summary: DONT BUY FROM GEORGE WIMPEY

I tend to agree with the writer. I too own a George Wimpey Home which we had from new three years ago. A month after we moved in, we found a crack at the back of the house which Wimpey said was "thermal movement." They replaced the bricks but three years later the crack is back with a vengeance, together with cracks all over the rear of the house. I called Wimpey and they did get a structural engineer out to check the house. Now I find that the house requires underpinning. Although I am covered by the NHBC, this will affect the price of my house in the future, should I wish to sell and will also mean that my insurance premiums will go through the roof.

The builders who I bought my house from were taken over by Wimpey. I had a few problems which dragged on. I eventually wrote a snotty letter to the MD of Wimpey, giving him a deadline and stating that if the job was not done by then I would contact the media. Result? His secretary rang me and the job was done in a week.

you should seek more legal advice. To me the gurantee is transferable under the sale, and therefore should not stop you from proceeding. I know I have had this with guarantees in the past and it has not been a problem
