I bought my first property last year through Halifax. What a horrible experience!

Not wanting to get in over my head, before even LOOKING at properties I had spoken to an independent financial advisor and arranged a mortgage at a rate I was happy with. I figured that this way, as soon as I found a house I liked I would be good to go.

Halifax weren't at ALL happy with this. It wasn't good enough that I wanted to put a bid in on one of their properties - they wanted me to get the mortgage too, whether I liked it or not.

I was told that it didn't matter what my financial advisor said, they could offer better because they didn't sell through financial advisors. I was told that there would be no time to call him and check, rates would change tomorrow. I was even told that if I didn't get a mortgage with Halifax, they wouldn't know it was guaranteed and I might lose the house. It was constant, every time we called, and on one occasion drove me to tears at the thought of losing the house.

Needless to say the seller knew none of this. Sellers should beware - if I hadn't REALLY wanted the house I might well have been driven away by the agent's attitude.

Summary: Pushy agents care about nothing but mortgages
