Advantages: They Help You Sell Your House
Disadvantages: They're Not Always As Helpful As They Might Be
Last year I found myself a new job that required relocation to a new area of the country that was about 60 miles from where I was already living. Obviously my house needed to be sold so I enlisted the services of the Halifax to help me out. They appeared to be quite helpful at first, and I duly signed up with the specific instruction that I did not want a sign outside my house. This was because there is no-one in during the day and this might have been a cue for burglars who might think that the house was not lived in. I also told the Halifax that I may change my mind about this request later, if the house was not pulling in prospective buyers, but for the moment I didn't want the sign putting up. However, to my disgust the sign went up two days later, and despite over a week of constant complaining, it was still there two weeks later. I took the matter into my own hands and ripped down the sign (with great difficulty I might add) and consigned the Halifax to the 'Bad' category with immediate effect, by telling them that I no longer required their services. I then signed up with Jones & Chapman, the estate agents I had used to buy my house originally. After all if they could sell it once they could sell it again - surely? Over time, nine long months in fact, they flattered to deceive with their inability to generate interest in the property. Only with constant communication from me, did they ever give a fraction of the effort required to sell the property. Hence an 'Indifferent' rating for these particular estate agents. Finally, however, after several price drops from me, to a price only just above what I'd paid for it four years previously, I sold my house. When I next move I would like some recommendations from other dooyoo-ers as to some 'Good' estate agents to use ie: are there any who actually care about selli
ng a property and are able to communicate effectively with sellers and buyers alike? Perhaps we can use dooyoo to recount our good (and bad) experiences with Estate Agents in order to help out fellow dooyoo-ers when they need to sell or buy a property. This may save us from some of the hassle that I've had with poor service from Estate Agents in the past.

POSSIBLY NOT. Glad to find we are not the only ones who have changed agents (we had three altogether before we sold) because of staff who cannot generate interest, follow up or 'sell' properties. I feel the staff ought to be on commission only, they'd bloody sell properties then!

- 06/08/00 The Halifax!Don't talk to me about the Halifax we had a nightmare with them from start to finish. I will write my own opinion as there is not enough space here. |

- 05/08/00 Very useful piece - and a good idea too - it's always useful to get the opinion of other people who've actually used a service - could save us all a lot of hassle |
