Excellent alternative to staying in a hotel, a place to call your own even if it's only for 24 hours

With offices in Southampton and Bournemouth, Town or Country (ToC) offer serviced, self-catering houses and apartments for those who are looking for flexible, 'home from home' accommodation. Whereas some companies focus on either the business or pleasure side of the market the range of properties available through ToC means that both types of visitor should easily be able to find somewhere to their liking. Of course it's easy to say the above but how does their service actually measure up when you move away from words and start dealing in actualities? This was put to the test about five weeks ago when I needed to travel to Southampton for a couple of days on business. I was due to spend time with a prospective client and develop business proposals to present to them. Now, the main problem I have when staying away on business is the limited amount of space available in a hotel room - it's fine for sleeping, but when you include working on a laptop in the same room and having the maids appear every day to tidy up, I tend to find it somewhat restrictive and claustrophobic. At the end of the day I also like to relax and for that I need a proper armchair or sofa and some privacy - something that is usually way beyond the budget that I have to work with when away from home. Therefore I began to search for an alternative to standard hotels about a week before leaving and came across ToC's website. Now it must be said that their website isn't the easiest to negotiate with regard to finding property availability but eventually I came across a list of properties available for the days I needed (two days mid-week). Being mindful of the budget (my wife would say mean) I booked a one bedroom apartment in Southampton's Ocean Village at a cost of £130 for the two nights (i.e. £65 per night) and kept my fingers crossed that I hadn't made a big mistake! As it turns out I most definitely hadn't, for a better rate than I would pay at the normal hotels I use I had a freshly cleaned, fully furnished apartment at my disposal with free wi-fi, a decent sound system, reclining chairs and what seemed like the world's biggest television. This was exactly what I needed. It allowed me to set up my laptop on the dining table, work on my proposal, meet with the client and then return back to the apartment to make adjustments before the full presentation on the second day. It felt like a true 'home from home', no enforced restaurant eating, no trying to relax in a noisy bar and no having to lie on the bed to watch tv. Would I recommend Town or Country? Definitely. This was the most relaxed I've been when pitching to a client and I'm actually looking forward to returning to Southampton on business and renting the same apartment.
