Advantages: They are bizarrely popular, so large choice of properties

Disadvantages: Dishonesty

My experience of Townends has been really bad; I rented a property with them in London and everything they said would be done wasn't. They make false promises, take forever to get back to you, and are quite blatantly on the make.

I will never ever use them again, I have been renting with different estate agents in London for years and they are by far the worst. I didn't discover this until I had handed money over, unfortunately - but it's a lesson learnt.

Summary: A very stressful experience

BTW I work part time in an estate agents, and the general hate comments just wash over me by now.

"on the make... Of course, all estate agents are..." that's a bit generalistic and not totally true. Lexy

As you say, totally unprofessional. If Townsends handed over the keys without you having a signed tenancy agreement (the FOOLS), you can always resort to squatting and would be hard to shift. The landlord might have a (wobbly) leg to stand on though, if he could prove that they were not authorised to act as his agent when they took a deposit from you. But if I were you, I'd sit tight and, as you say, take legal advice.
