Denon sound systems are among the best (Denon AVR-1804)

Advantages: Lots of inputs. HDMI support. Good controls. Auto-switching for Dolby 5.1

Disadvantages: Menus are sometimes fiddly. No menu on TV, only on small screen.

I can't fault the Denon brand for home theatre systems.

There are a lot of cheap 5.1 systems nowadays that are very tempting, but if you want a true hair-raising experience, it's nice to go for something with substance - an amplifier like this one.

We've used ours to replace our ageing hi-fi alongside a Denon DVD player and a Bush turntable.

The sound is so fantastic that we have never gone back to using the TV's inbuilt speakers. Most of the time, we use 5-channel stereo, providing clear sound all around the room. When we watch programmes with Dolby 5.1, it switches automatically. How could you have HD and not surround sound?

The subtle sounds are reproduced very accurately and explosions etc are very good in proportion. The bass speaker, for example, shakes the floor like an earthquake in film scenes of high intensity.

Going back to TV speakers after experiencing a sound system like this is tinny and unbearable.

Summary: Better than a cheap and cheerful 5.1 speaker system.
