Having bought a ps3 and liking the blu ray function i thought it was time to upgrade my ageing Pioneer receiver and make use of the hdmi goodness. Opening up the box revealed the receiver to be well packaged with everything neatly inside. It looks a real beast of a receiver and dwarfs my old pioneer, it's not ugly looking at all, it just looks very functional! Set up was really easy and it even comes with a little sound test mic/dongle that you position in your room where you would sit. Connecting up the speakers was easy enough with the speaker posts/ connectors being of good solid build quality. The setup menu on the receiver took a bit of getting used to but it was top notch and informed me i had connected up the speakers wrong when it did the sound test- oops! once that was corrected it let out a chime at the end of the test to say all was correct. I've only made use of 1 of the 3 hdmi in ports at the moment (ps3) and have the hdmi out port going to my tv. Changing the settings on the ps3 to lpcm and chucking in a blu ray it was time to hear the difference- and ,oh boy, there was a big difference! I found the sound to be superb with pin sharp clarity and the depth and seperation of the speakers was really noticeable- superb sound from blu rays and even the games sound superb- hearing the bullets fly over you in Resistance 2 has to be heard. I've found no major niggles with this receiver and think it is a fantastic product for its price- though please be aware that this receiver will not work if the hdmi out is going to a dvi input on your telly.(my older lcd had a dvi input and would not display the picture/no sound) all in all worth every penny.
