Advantages: Fun to decorate and looks so effective.
Disadvantages: Very sweet.
When I was Anorexic I took great joy in baking cakes for everyone and watching them consume the calories. I would bake cake after cake thinking of different flavours and designs so as you can imagine I got quite creative and experimental.
The cake I am about to share with you has become a massive hit on both sides of my family and whenever it's someone's birthday I usually try to make it. It's not about the actual sponge of the cake although that is really tasty, it's all in the decoration.
The cake as a whole is very sweet and if you continue reading you will see why. It's great for children's parties and adults alike.
The sponge.
You will need:
6oz self-raising flour
6oz margarine
6oz caster sugar
3 medium eggs, beaten
3 handfuls of chocolate chips
Double cream whipped until light and fluffy
Jam (Any flavour of your choice)
1) Pre-heat oven to gas mark 4/180'C and line two circular baking trays with marg.
2) Put the Caster sugar and Margarine in a bowl and cream together with the back of a wooden spoon.
3) Add approx half of the flour and egg and gently stir into the mixture.
4) Repeat this process.
5) Add all of the chocolate chips ad stir intot he mixture.
6) Split the mixture evely between the two baking trays and cook in the oven for approx 20 minutes. You will know when the mixture is cooked if you put a knife into the middle of the cake and it comes out clean.
7) Once the cakes are cool pop one out onto a cake base or plate. Cover the top with a nice thick layer of jam followed by an even thicker layer of double cream.
8) Put the other cake on top.
For the decoration
You will need:
A bag of flumps
Milk chocolate (of your choice)
A variety of different sweets. For example I usually use things like Giant Smarties, milk bottles, cola bottles, milky buttons, revels, jelly babies etc So whatever takes your fancy but try to make sure the sweets are quite bright and colourful and it adds to the 'Wow factor' when you bring it out.
1) Melt the chocolate and spoon it onto the plate of cake base directly beside the cake and all of the way around.
2) Place the flumps onto the chocolate horizontally. This covers up the double cream that is spilling out the sides and any messy ends.
3) Spoon more of the melted chocolate on top of the cake being careful not to let it drip everywhere.
4) This is the fun part! Open up all of the sweets you have and cover the whole of the top of the cake in them leaving no gaps. Try to be creative but don't just dump anything anywhere. Have some consistency but other than that enjoy eating as well as placing:)
5) Leave for half an hour to an hour for the chocolate to dry.
The only down side of this cake is, you will need a sharp knife to cut it and you can't have too much because it's very sweet.
It's a great cake to decorate with the kids and I garantee your guests eyes will be popping out of their heads.
Summary: Everyone will love this cake.
