Advantages: Yummy
Disadvantages: Too yummy!
I work in an open plan office with a lively, friendly bunch. They also like their food and we have in the past indulged in cheese days on a monthly basis. We soon got bored of this however, there's only so much cheese you can eat even if your name is Gromit (or is it Wallis?!!)
Anyway, as an alternative we've settled on cake days, where we all take turns every week to bake a cake of some description and bring them in for all to share. We've had apple cakes, chocolate eclairs, Victoria sponges and rocky road so far, all delicious and of course far too fattening, but who cares when they taste so good with a cuppa at 11am on a cold day?
My turn came last weekend and I thought, yeah easy I'll make a sponge cake and wow them with my chocolate concoction.....only it didn't work out that way as I forgot to buy flour, doh'!!!! With no time to head to the shops what was I to do?....
A quick check of the store cupboard didn't look too promising until I had a brainwave, flapjacks! ok it's not cake but it's sweet and yummy and surely the troops will like them?
I mixed 400grams of porridge oats with a tablespoon of cocoa, 150grams of light brown muscavado sugar, 250grams of butter and two tablespoons of maple syrup. The mixture is dense and smells heavenly. I spread the lot on to a baking tray being careful not to make the mixture too thin and also to square the edges. (makes it easier to but the flapjacks into neat bars)
I baked them in the oven for 20 minutes at 180c (I only have an electric oven) then let them cool slightly before cutting them into 20 bars.
I tasted one of the flapjacks (as you do of course) and thought they were a bit "biscuity" not soft and chewy like I thought they should be. I didn't panic though and topped them off with a drizzle of melted milk chocolate. I then let them set in the fridge.
My colleagues loved them and the whole lot has gone within two days. They were cheap to make delicious. Give em a try, they have to be better for you than anything you could buy in the shops, and less expensive too!
Summary: Sweet!

- 14/11/09 If I worked in your office, they would have all gone within the day:-)
Very quick thinking on your part to come up with that idea.
