Advantages: Taste, taste and taste.. amazing, tender beef, load of alternatives!
Disadvantages: Beef can be expensive and it needs to cook for a long time
Steak and onion in thick gravy!
Ingredients
450g diced Braising steak
Two large onions- to be diced
Eight big potatoes- for mash or roasters
2 pints of gravy
2 cups of peas- frozen peas are fine
Four large carrots- diced
Take the diced braising steak pop onto a frying pan and fry until sealed add the two onions after chopping into chunks. Fry the onion with the meat until the onion is browned then add 1 pint of gravy and leave on a low heat to simmer for 20 minutes.
Peel and dice the carrot then cook until soft.
Peel and chop the potatoes cook until soft then mash you can add a little butter or milk if you wish or cook until soft then pop in the oven with some oil for roast potatoes.
Put the braising steak, onion, peas, carrots and gravy into an ovenproof dish. Add the rest of the gravy. Place in the oven on 180 degrees for an hour
Top with the mash then return to the oven for a further 30 minutes. The mash should become a nice golden brown.
Then serve! You can make additional gravy if you wish.
This is very tasty the meat will become very tender and the gravy will be very juicy. I have made this with just steak, onion and gravy before and served with vegetables and chips. This can be frozen if you use fresh steak. This will serve about four adults. This is a nice winter warmer and is very filling.
You can vary this buy doing roast potatoes or chips instead of the mash. You can serve with vegetables alongside instead of being inside the pie. You can make this with pastry also.
If you have a slow cooker you could make this much easier by adding the steak, onion and gravy to the slow cooker.
Summary: Steak and onion with veg and potatoes
