Eggs in General
Advantages: Tasty, cheap, renewable and convenient
What is an egg?
An egg is small and oval (often with a hard outer shell) object that is laid by the female of many animals. The eggs that humans generally eat are bird eggs and to be more specific chicken eggs (duck eggs are become increasingly popular also). The chicken eggs on our supermarket shelves are unfertilised eggs lain by chickens that are and kept separately from roosters to prevent fertilisation.
Eggs are very versatile ingredients and are used in all sorts of dishes and cooking processes. Eggs can be purchased in almost all shops and supermarkets and vary in price depending on the size and range. Generally a box of 6 eggs cost £1.29. There are two different ranges of eggs available the battery hen range and the free range. This describes the way the laying chickens are kept when the eggs are produced. Battery hens are kept in very small and restrictive surroundings that is thought by some to be cruel and detrimental to the quality of an egg. Free-range hens are allowed to wander around open ground and this is generally thought to be more beneficial to the animal and the quality of the eggs.
Eggs can be boiled, poached, fried, scrambled and many other different forms of cooking, Egg are also used lots in the cooking of products such as cakes, pastries and to bond foods together such as burgers and meatballs.
I have no idea where to start on this one so my advice is- if you dint know then try one
In the 1980's there was a major health scare concerning eggs and their connection with salmonella. Eggs are however, now thought to be very safe to eat. It is still recommended that you hard-boil eggs before consumption especially for children.
Eggs are a cheap and renewable source of food in addition to being nutritious and convenient
My favourite egg dish-
The traditional omelette-
Mix together two large eggs, a dash of milk, a knob of butter and some salt in pepper. Pour into a large frying pan and cook until no runny bits left. Flip half way through for best effects. Serve with crisp green salad
Nutritiously eggs are thought to be good for us I small amounts. An egg contains approx. 75cals and very little fat. The fat that it present comes from the yolk only
An essential part of our diets
