I only recently started baking, after having a horrendous time of it at school in cookery lessons. Other than getting 98% in a cookery theory exam, my marks were always the lowest in the class. So as you can imagine, my first few forays back into the world of bakery were going to have to be easy ones. I cooked blackberry and apple pies, then made jam and then I found this cupcake recipe online, to which I have gradually made some changes to make it mine. I made these cupcakes (or fairycakes, or buns as they call them over here in Yorkshire!) for the second time in preparation for a family visit (my parents, my sister, her boyfriend, their baby and Mr. Nykied's ... Jewelled fairy muffins. My daughter received a recipe book as a gift a few years ago as a Christmas present, and we put it to use for her birthday (which is new years day) making following various recipes from the book. One of the recipes was Jewelled fairy muffins. We found them really easy and fun to make and the end result was fantastic, the looked and tasted fantastic. I had many parents request the recipe for these. These muffins are a huge hit with gown ups and mini-grown ups. To make 12, good sized muffins, you will need 150 ml (1/4 pint) milk 65g (2 1/2) oz plain chocolate drops 150g ( 5oz) caster ... Read the complete review

Some recipe classics never go out of fashion and fairy cakes top the list They are the stuff of childhood memories: just one nibble can transport you back in time and even today, no self-respecting children's birthday party would be without them. That said, why should the kids have all the fun? With just a little tweaking, fairy cakes can be turned into grown-up fare as well, perfect for a mid-morning coffee break, tea in the afternoon or packed lunch treats. The basic recipe is oh-so-simple so you can keep it plain or indulge yourself with extravagant toppings. Some die-hard purists may omit the vanilla extract but I think fairy cakes are better ... I like making fairy cakes with my granddaughter, we use the same basic recipe for the cakes but add various toppings for different occasions. I shall give you the recipe and also a few different topping ideas, although really you can let your imagination run wild when making fairy cakes and anything from icing and silver balls to a rich butter cream with rose petals can make the cakes suit the eaters. Don't forget, fairy cakes are not just for children. With the right toppings you can make a fairy cake fit for a posh dinner party, I particularly like making a thick and fluffy chocolate butter cream and piping it on rather than simply spreading it. Then I ... Read the complete review

Baking fairy cakes is a great way to pass time, especially if you want to occupy some kids. I do this quite often when I'm looking after my niece and nephew and they love it, though I still have most of the mixture when its been put in to the cake holders. Making fairy cakes is pretty simple and are suitable for any occasion and even for when it isn't. My mum use to make them for me when I was younger to take school, and they always lasted for quite some time is she put them in a tin. So, how to make them, there are plenty of ways to make them but how I do I use; 4oz self-raising flower 4oz caster sugar 4oz butter 2 medium ... Read the complete review
