Is it just me or are traditional sunday dinners great?
So why is it that everyone I know do not bother having one on a Sunday?
The usual reason is I cant be bothered, or it just doesnt taste the same as my mums, these are lame excuses.
Sunday dinner is a great meal, a nice piece of meat, several portions of vegetables then covered in a lovely meaty gravy, very balanced and nutritious.
When I first made a sunday lunch for the first time six years ago it was a disaster, my nan makes great dinners but I could never get it to taste the same.
After years of practise I have managed to nail the perfect recipe for the perfect Sunday dinner.
Firstly find a nice joint of meat (I prefer lamb it makes nicer gravy), and cover loosley in tin foil, roast lightly in the oven for a couple of hours depending on the size of the joint.
About 45 minutes prior to the meat coming out of the oven prepare your vegetables, use fresh veg, it tastes nicer and is healthier, use orgabic if you can afford it, it usually more expensive but does taste great.
Lightly scrape the skins from the potatos and carrots and turnip, trim a cauliflower and slice it up into smaller florets.
Place the Cauilflower in a pan of slightly salted water and bring to the boil then simmer for 30 mins.
Repeat this for the carrots and swede ommiting the salt, it tastes nicer without.
The potatoes need cutting into for equal quarters and placing in a pan of boiling water, boil for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat.
Cover the pan with a lid and shake the pan vigourously to lightly fluff the edges of the potatoes, then add this to the juices in the roasting pan with the meat.
Baste the potatoes with the juices, then remove some of the stock for the gravy, return the meat and the potatoes to the oven for 30 minutes turining the potatoes at intervals.
For the gravy mix some plain flour and bisto gravy powder
together with a small amount of water, then add the stock and some of the water used to cook the cauliflower in, heat gently whilst stirring.
Dish it all up, pour on your gravy and tuck in to the best sunday dinner ever.
I bet you are all watering at the mouth now.
Im off to go and finnish my tea off Lamb for me today see you later and enjoy your meal.
