Advantages: tasty, less dishes to do as it is a one pot meal, inexpensive ingredients

Disadvantages: takes a bit of time to cook

This is one of my partner’s favourite meals, although he likes it to be spicier than I do. I enjoy it because it’s one of the few lamb dishes I know and it is quite straightforward to make. Add to this that the only dirty dish will be the wok that you use to cook it and we’re on to a winning combination.

You can serve it with rice, but we usually have it with a couple of pitta breads or even on it’s own (as we are tonight because I have forgotten to buy the breads).

Preparation time: about 10 minutes
Cooking time: about 50 minutes
Utensils needed: a wok, wooden spoon, teaspoon, tablespoon, potato peeler, can opener, garlic crusher and sharp knife

-- Ingredients --

500 grams of minced lamb
400 grams (about four medium sized) potatoes, cubed
Two medium onions, finely chopped
A couple of handfuls of frozen peas
Tin of chopped tomatoes
Pint of water
Couple of tablespoons of vegetable oil
- Spices -
Fresh garlic and ginger, pulped with a teaspoonful of medium chilli powder
Two heaped teaspoonfuls of ground coriander
Three heaped teaspoonfuls of garam masala
One and a half teaspoonfuls of turmeric
One teaspoonful of ground cumin
Two teaspoonfuls of salt

-- Recipe --

1. Heat up a couple of tablespoonfuls of vegetable oil in the wok.

2. Add the finely chopped onion and fry until golden brown.

3. Add the pulped garlic, ginger and chilli and continue to fry on a medium heat for a couple of minutes.

4. Add the minced lamb and continue to fry until browned.

5. Add all the dry spices and give it a good stir until all the meat has been coated.

6. Add the tinned tomatoes and give it another good stir. Let it simmer for another couple of minutes.

7. Add in the cubed potatoes and the pint of water, giving it another good stir. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer until the potatoes are cooked.

8. Add the frozen peas and continue to simmer for another 15 minutes.

9. If you want you can stir in some fresh chopped coriander and serve.

-- Cost Breakdown --

For those on a budget buying all the ingredients needed to make this meal comes to £8.07.

(this will leave you with extra some extra bits and pieces that you can use towards other meals, plus you will have the spices in the cupboard for next time)

500g of frozen minced lamb for £1.31
3 pack mild onions for £0.70
400g tin of budget chopped tomatoes for £0.15
2.5kg of white potatoes for £0.93
1kg of value peas for £0.52
1 litre vegetable oil for £0.43
1 bulb garlic for £0.20
1 ginger root for £0.40
