Bargain beef mince
Member Name: PerfectPeaches
Disadvantages: Quite fatty
One thing that is always in our freezer or fridge is beef mince. I find it incredibly versatile whether I'm cooking a chilli, lasagne, cottage pie etc. I've always found beef mince good value but currently during this horrible economic downturn saving the pennies is incredibly important (especially as there is a baby on the way!). I'm quite happy to try cheaper alternatives in a bid to save money. I've always been a bit funny about cheaper versions of meat and fish but on a recent trip to my local Tesco I noticed that the Tesco Value beef mince looked exactly the same the higher priced minces so I thought I'd give it a try.
*** Packaging ***
The beef mince comes in clear packaging so you can see every single inch of the mince (unlike some which come in a black plastic tray). The label on the front is the usual blue and white colours of the value range. Simple packaging for a simple product.
*** Cooking ***
When frying the mince I did notice that an awful lot of fat came off the mince. Now I know I didn't choose lean or extra lean which is very low in fat but I did have to drain this mince several times throughout cooking it which meant until I had finally drained all the excess fat away I couldn't really add any seasoning or other items such as garlic or onions etc.
Apart from the fat issue the mince cooked well it breaks up into little pieces once it is all cooked through.
*** Result ***
Compared to other beef minces I have used there is hardly a difference to me which is a good thing as I can buy a cheaper alternative and it still tastes the same! However, I did find a few fatty/ grizzly bits which did put me off slightly. My partner also had this problem but it didn't seem to bother him at all. I guess in any meat products whether they are the cheapest or the most expensive you can get fatty bits so I was determined not to be deterred! I would say that in the whole packet 98% is perfectly edible beef mince which tastes perfectly pleasant

*** Overall ***
It isn't the healthiest of beef minces but it serves a purpose. The only downside (other than it not being the healthiest) is the amount of fat that comes off the mince when it is being cooked. I guess if you want something healthier it would be best to buy extra lean mince. I will be buying this again as it is handy to have as its ideal for freezing.
Summary: It serves a purpose
