Advantages: A lovely stodgy, filling winter food.
Disadvantages: The eggs are quite expensive.
I wasn't really sure which category to put this recipe in but it has got potatoes in it so I thought I'd pop it in here. Please don't punish me too severely if you don't think it's the right place!
When I was little my mum used to cook the meal that I am about to write up and although it sounds a bit odd I can guarantee that if you don't mind eggs then you will really love it. It is such a great stodgy winter food and it combines your proteins, carbohydrates, calcium and vegetables all in one meal. What more can you ask from just one dish?!
Egg Au Gratin
For the potatoes
1) Peel and boil 6 big potatoes.
2) When they are soft drain the water.
3) Add a splash of milk, a sprinkle of pepper and a knob of butter.
4) Mash with a potato masher.
For the eggs
Boil up around 6 eggs for about 6 minutes until they are hard boiled.
For the sauce
1) Put five knobs of butter in a pan and melt under the heat.
2) Take off the heat and add plain flour until the mixture is thick in consistency, almost like playdoh.
3) Gradually add two mugs of milk whilst stirring.
4) Return to the heat and stir until the sauce becomes fairly thick.
5) Leave to stand.
I would suggest that you get the potatoes on first as they take the longest. While they are boiling you can sort out the other ingredients.
Putting it together
1) Chop the eggs into slices once you have taken the shell off and line a flat pyrex dish with them.
2) Pour the white sauce over the top of them.
3) Add the mashed potato on top of the sauce smoothing it out so the top of the gratin is flat.
4) Add a couple of slices of chopped tomato and grate a sprinkling of cheese over it.
Oven directions
Put it in the oven gas mark 4/180'C for around 15-20 minutes. This should brown the top and make it all nice and hot.
Serve with steamed vegetables of your choice. If you don't fancy veg then it goes great with a good old fashioned tin of baked beans.
Enjoy!
Summary: A lovely family meal.
