Advantages: Homemade, you know what it in it, easy, cheap, Freezable. Fat Free
Now we are constantly being told, downshift and make things from scratch. WE ARE IN A CREDIT CRUNCH!!!
So I am here to help! This sauce I 'discovered' when buying a pack of ready made sauce of the same name in Aldi - lovely sauce 99p. I suddenly had a brain wave. It takes a while!!
~Could I make this myself?~
Answer - yes. What is in it? Tomato and Chilli. Why I can make that, I thought.
So armed with a tin of tomatoes I venture to the kitchen (I do keep my tomatoes in the kitchen, I thought it sounded more dramatic!)
Ingredients - Serves 2
Tin of chopped tomatoes / or you can use passata to make it extra bargainous - I use value at 30-33p a tin
Dash of Chilli flakes to taste - these come in tiny packets made by Schwartz and the like for a fortune, look in the international food section in your supermarket, or go to an asian food shop, you will get 4 times the amount for half the price.
Pan On - Pop the chilli flakes in a pan, add tomatoes and rinse the tin out with a little water for more volume, pop in a squeeze of tomato puree and the oxo cube. I use beef as it goes well with tomato, you can also use vegetable if vegetarian. Let it come to the boil then simmer, give it a stir now and again let it simmer until it is thicker.
This is super fat free and depends on your tastes. If you love hot food put loads of chilli in, if you just like a kick, just add a dash.
This can be frozen and defrosted to make life even easier, you can also add herbs such as Oregano and Mixed Herbs for an authentic Italian taste.
I realised from making this there are a lot of way to save money, and I think I now save at least 50p every time I make this as opposed to buying it (even more if I use Passata). Let me know how you get on and any other additions you make to make it different.
Summary: A lovely pasta sauce at half the price of a store bought one !
