Advantages: After all these years Ive found the perfect sandwich
Disadvantages: A lot of awlful sandwich memories:)
Isn't it funny how the most mundane of food, when placed between two slices of bread can turn into something so spectacular? For instance I would never dream of eating a tin of tuna chunks but when mixed together with some mayonnaise and put between two slices of fresh, wholemeal bread topped with cucumber and pepper it becomes one of my favourite meals of the day!
I have a history with sandwiches and it goes way back to when I was a little girl at school. Everyday I would go to the dinner hall with my little packed lunch box (I was never allowed school dinners because they costs so much) and whilst chatting with my friends I'd scan inside to see what delights I had to gorge on. Everyday there would be a couple of sandwiches and as I'd reach for the chocolate bar beside it I would hear my mother voice ringing in my ears, 'Eat your sandwiches first'. I'd feel so condemned so I rip open the foil they were neatly packaged in and examine what was inside. By doing this I knew exactly what day of the week it was. If they were filled to the brim with cheese or ham then I knew my mum had been shopping recently, if there was egg mayonnaise spilling over then it was about mid-week and if I saw a mixture of peanut butter and jam (or 'jelly' as the americans say) then I knew shopping day was just around the corner. I knew things were pretty dier if I had that cheap sandwich paste that tasted like dog food between two slices of stale, white bread.
The other thing I remember about my childhood and sandwiches was the fact that we always ate sandwiches for lunch. There was never an occasion where we'd have sandwiches for our evening meal apart from on a sunday when my mum would cook a roast for lunch. Can you guess what would be filled to overflowing inside our sandwich at tea -time? Yes, it was whatever meat we'd had at lunch mixed with a bit of salad cream so it wasn't as dry as Ghandi's flip flop.
So with all those firm foundations of 'sandwiches' laid you can probably imagine that they are still a huge part of my life now but as you can also imagine it has to right. No chicken paste, peanut butter or jam in my cupboards thank you very much:)
Here is my ultimate sandwich:)
The bread has to be a fresh, uncut loaf from the supermarket. (not that cheap stuff I reviewed earlier in the week) Depending on what mood I'm in it can be white, wholemeal or granary. I cut it medium- sliced because if it's too thick then you wont get the benefit of the ingredients inside.
This part is very important. DO NOT BUTTER THE BREAD!!!!!.
Mix some chicken (not the chicken left over from my mum's roast dinner!) with some 'Reggae, reggae sauce' then add a little chilli and guerkins. Chuck this onto the bread generously and add some sliced cheese on top. Put under the grill until the cheese has melted then add lettuce, cucumber and tomato. Put the lid on, slice from corner to corner and there you have it!
Obviously this would be no good for someone who is sensitive to hot stuff but I love it.
Thanks for coming down memory lane with me.
Summary: Everyone likes a good sarnie so try mine!
