Advantages: quick, easy to make cheap
Disadvantages: Mayonnaise!!!
What would we do if the Earl of Sandwich had never had his brinwave? How boring would life be? I, personally, don't know what I would do without sandwiches in my life. Take tonight, for example: I got in from work at around 9 o'clock. What do I eat? Can't really cook things at that time- by the time they're ready to eat I would probably be fast asleep! So went for a quick and simple solution, poached egg sandwich. Simply boil some water, poach an egg for 3 minutes, slip between 2 slices of buttered bread. What could be easier? Only problem is you end up with egg everywhere- and one is never enough!
The one drawback I find for sandwiches is inadequate sandwiches from shops. I'm not talking deli-style shops here, where they will make you up the strangest recipes in a matter of seconds- I love these shops. I'm talking about your supermarket sandwiches. Not only are the sandwiches so thin you can almost eat them in 3 bites, but mainly the flavours are horrible too!
I'm a bit unusual here: I HATE mayonnaise. Loathe it. When I was pregnant, even the smell walking past a takeaway was enough to make me sick (not good when there was one at the top of my street!). But shops seem to think that everybody loves the stuff, so consequently they cover all there sandwiches in the stuff! In my local Boots store, the place where I would buy a sndwich from if need be, they do one sandwich with no mayo in. ONE. Philidelphia cheese spread and ham. Not exactly the most filling, I'm sure you will agree, however nice and mayonnaise-free it is. PLEASE start thinking of us when you're making our lunches! I can't b the only person in the world who doesn't like it!
Anyway, rant over, here are my favourite sandwiches:
Cooked ham with tomato sauce- works best with Yorkshire ham, with a squirt of tomato sauce on white breadcakes.
Honey roasted ham and Pringles. Preferably cheese and onion, or plain will do. These were a pregnancy staple of mine, and I still haven't grown out of them!
Sausage and egg. Always cook the sausages on the George Foreman and have poached egg, with just a little bit of white round it. This will sort you out from a hangover in no time!
Last but not least: the cheese toastie. I always use grated cheese for mine, and again squirt some tomato sauce in before closing it up. Makes it taste a bit like a pizza!
Wonder if anyone else will like my strange concoctions?
Summary: Keep that mayo away from me!

- 14/01/09 My guess is that if Sandwich hadn't invented them (if he did and it wasn't his butler's idea) then someone else would have done. Rocket science they ain't.
I'd prefer poached egg on toast (with HP sauce) to a poached egg sandwich though. |
