Beko CDA648F
by Ames123 First of all a few specifications. This is a frost free, auto defrost fridge/freezer with the fridge having a 175l and the freezer a 94l capacity. It has a grade A energy rating, a four star freezer rating and dimensions are (H)190.6 x (W)59.5 x (D)60.0. I know it says auto defrost but sometimes you never know but as far as I am aware we ... have never had to defrost this by hand. We do have a little frost at the back of the fridge but nothing major. The silver does not exactly match our kitchen but then we do have a silver cooker too and the fridge is tucked away so does not look too bad. In fact the colour hides minor dirt and finger marks. The inside walls are white with glass shelves that are all easy to clean. The design is sleek as there are no handles, you can either open the fridge with the bottom of the door which has a large, groove all long or by just opening where the suction is at the side. The freezer opens similarly but at the top. You do need to be careful that it shuts properly as just giving it the door a push close sometimes leaves it open. The glass shelves are all movable including the ones on the door which includes an egg tray. We use the bottom tray on the door to store milk and juice which can fit in four 2l bottles. The bottom of the fridge has two pull out salad boxes. One of them must have broken as we only have one. This suits us fine as by not having the glass shelf above (it smashed) most of the salad fits in the one box as there is room for it to stick out. The other side allows room for bottles (2l milk not 2l fizzy drink size). The shelves in the fridge width-wise are nearly twice a pizza box size (Asda chosen by you to be specific!) and the depth of just over one. The freezer starts with a thin pull out ice tray which allows your ice cube tray to sit flat to freeze. You can also put various fruit and vegetables in to freeze. The first draw underneath is a fast-freeze and has a pull down lid rather than pulling out like the other three drawers do. The drawers are a see-through/frosted plastic. They are deep (fitting the mentioned pizza in flat) and you can fit enough in for a family of four or five if you shop regularly. We do have a chest freezer now as well so I would say this would suit 3 people ideally without having to shop for a while. The fridge though has plenty of room. It is pretty tall, but then it is a fridge/freezer. I have no issue with reaching the top of the fridge, none of us do, but then we are not small in our house! Others may struggle to reach the back of the top shelf however you could move it down one. I cannot however reach on the top of the appliance. It is handy to store trays and cake tins but not worth keeping anything else as I would need a stool to reach the back. The good thing with the design is that the back has wheels so moving it around is a little easier. The doors can also be put on opening either way. It also comes in white, the model number being CDA648FW. This silver is CDA648FS1. Prices for this fridge in silver are: £267 from nextdomesticappliances.co.uk £279 from comet.co.uk This fridge/freezer is a good appliance for us. We needed a decent size one as we have never been one to be able to use a tiny one and this provides ample space, particularly in the fridge. We have not had any problems with it and can happily recommend it. Read the complete review |

Beko CDA554S
by Drewster_Rooster **Introduction** Last year we in the Rooster household bought a new cooker and in the review I wrote about it at the time I mentioned that we specifically went for a stainless steel model to match in with our grey/silver Fridge Freezer, specifically the Beko CDA554S and the focus of this, my latest review. Up until the ... purchase of this particular fridge freezer we had always favoured white appliances but as they are prone to showing dirty fingerprints and often end up looking grubby we decided to go for something a little different to what we were used to and so settled for this Beko silver one at price of just under £300.00. Three or so years later and our Fridge Freezer has ended up becoming the place we stick family photographs, magnets and notes to so its colour has become irrelevant really but in the spaces between our added extras (or memories as we like to call them) and the sides its Matt silver finish can still be seen and as this review will attempt to explain it was a superb buy which gave us almost exactly what we were looking for even if there are a couple of niggles that have become apparent over the course of our ownership of it. **The Basics** As illustrated in the supplied picture the Beko 554S is a freestanding Fridge Freezer with a 60/40 split ratio. The Fridge section is at the top and the Freezer below, it stands 172cm in height, measures 54.5cm in width and 60cm in depth and is an A rated appliance. For the purpose of this review I'll cover each section separately and mention the features you can expect to gain if this model is the one you are thinking of buying: **Fridge** Starting at the bottom of the fridge there are 2 removable transparent drawers which are most commonly used for storing fresh food and salad items, we tend to use one of the drawers for cans of drink as they fit perfectly and allows easy access to them whilst keeping them cold. Above the drawers are three adjustable glass shelves which sit on moulded plastic 'runners' which are located on both sides of the interior of the fridge, these are easily removed if required and can be placed in whatever position suits your own individual needs depending on the thickness of whatever it is you are wanting to keep refrigerated. The door has a bottle rack which can easily hold 2 x 4 pint milk cartons along with a little space left over and sitting above that further up is a shelf and also an egg rack located near to the top of the door. Beko have certainly maximised the space available for storage with this model and for a family of 2 we find that we can pack a good deal of food into the fridge and make good use of what is offered to us. The total available fridge space according to Beko is 176 litres, I have no idea if that is accurate or not but felt it worth mentioning as this would make this fridge a little smaller than some other models available and could be a deciding factor in whether this is one that other people would consider buying. **Freezer** There are 2 deep-ish drawers in the freezer section along with a drop-front compartment and ice cube tray, the drawers are of decent depth to allow bread to be frozen without being squashed and the drop front compartment is ideal for storing bags of ice cubes, ice cream and other items you want easy access to. We don't use the ice cube tray as we buy bagged ice (lazy, I know) so can't really comment on its usefulness. We tend to not use the freezer very much to be honest as the majority of food we eat is fresh and therefore stored in the fridge, however the freezer drawers are handy and used more over Christmas where we freeze bread and ready-made party food that just needs putting into the oven to cook. Again Beko advise that the total freezer space available is 71 litres which doesn't sound all that much to me but as already stated is enough for what we use the freezer for. **In Everyday Use** Basics covered and like any other houshold appliance all I expected and wanted from this was something that was reliable and would do the job it was designed to do and all in all I have very little to complain about with this fridge freezer from Beko. I make the space available work for me, it keeps my fresh food cold and my frozen food frozen and as its still going strong 3 years or more since its purchase then I cannot fault its reliability. There are niggles with the fridge it has to be said, the most annoying aspect for me comes down to something as simple as storing bottles, as they have to be positioned on the left hand side of the fridge otherwise they end up coming in contact with the milk that is stored in the door and prevents the fridge from shutting. It's a stupid little foible of this fridge that you can't actually fit a 2 litre bottle of pop on the right hand side but every week I have to juggle what I buy to make sure I can get everything to fit. It would have been a better design had the depth of both the fridge and freezer been a little more generous and I know it is a picky little fault but it is the most annoying thing about the fridge as a whole. Similarly over time I have noticed that the unit has become a little louder than it originally was, it will judder for no apparent reason and whilst not noisy it is still noticeable in the kitchen, I do put this down to age and the fact that it has been switched on permanently for years and years so this is to be expected I guess. On the positive side the fridge does have a very responsive temperature control which does work remarkably well and is put to good use in the summer months when it is decidedly warmer outside, I did notice one year when we had a very hot summer that food was going off quicker in the fridge so adjusted the temperature control to a cooler setting and this did eradicate the problem so again is a really good feature to be aware of. As with any fridge there is an internal light which comes on when the door is opened, I'm not going to say too much about this as it's obvious what it's there for and isn't anything unexpected from an appliance of this nature. Unfortunately the freezer does need to be defrosted from time to time to prevent a build up of ice and unlike some models which have self regulating controls this model from Beko doesn't, be aware therefore that there will be times when you have to take everything out of the freezer and defrost it. It's a hazard of owning such an item that this a requirement and in retrospect I do wish we had opted for one with an auto-defrost setting but for the price this model retails for it's a minor inconvenience in what is otherwise a very impressive buy. I don't think this would be the first choice I would suggest a larger family go for as the space you are given might not be sufficient for your needs. It suits us as there's only two of us at home and for the food we buy we have enough room, if you have children or have a regular stream of people coming in and out of your home then you may struggle as I don't think 176 litres of space in the fridge and only 71 in the freezer (250L it total, apparently although that equals 247 from my calculations) is very much when compared to other models. For a couple on their own this is a fine choice and overall I would recommend this fridge freezer but shop around and check out other models would be my advice if you are wanting something that will keep enough food fresh for a larger family. **Conclusion, Availability and My Rating** Overall I have been very pleased with my fridge freezer from Beko, for a brand who has to compete with the likes of Samsung, Hotpoint and Indesit they have produced a reliable and well made piece of essential kitchen equipment with this model and for the time we have owned it I have very few complaints. It isn't as spacious as some other models but for us it is fine and at well under £300.00 as it currently retails for I couldn't ask for anything more. There are a few niggles as explained in this review but nothing is perfect and I'm sure higher priced fridge freezers would have some reasons for complaint, if it's reliability you're looking for then there's little to complain about with this one and its on that basis that I'm awarding an excellent 5 star rating as far as this review is concerned. In an ideal world I'd have a large American style fridge freezer which defrosts itself but until I move into a bigger property that has the space for one or win some money to actually buy one then I'm happy to stick with what I have, although saying that I do keep reading reviews on here about black fridge freezers which do look visually appealing so may in time be tempted to upgrade. The CDA554 from Beko can be found at Argos where it is currently retailing for £239.99 and is available either in white or, like mine, silver. For that price I think its a steal and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has a limited budget but is on the look out for a functional yet reliable fridge freezer that is easy on the eye. Thanks for reading my review, please note that this may also appear on ciao under my username. Read the complete review |

Beko CDA648F
by noodlesandwich We purchased this fridge freezer almost four years ago from Argos and it's still going strong. I'm surprised to realise we've had it that long actually, (and that I haven't already reviewed it). I don't remember exactly how much we paid although I seem to remember it was in a sale. A check on Amazon brings up the current lowest available ... price for this model as just under £300, I think ours was closer to the £250 mark. We bought it because we were in need of more freezer space. It's nice and tall and the freezer space is almost double that of our old fridge which was on it's last legs. I also prefer to have the fridge as the top half and freezer on the bottom, it was the other way round on our old one. ~Freezer~ The freezer has four large spaces for food - three storage drawers, plus a fast freeze compartment and an ice bank tray. It's very cold and very efficient. As seems usual in these style of freezers the bottom drawer has less space than the two above it, (it's got the thingumajig behind it). We finally lost the flap door on our fast freeze compartment a couple of months ago, it was cracked and had been taped up for a while. It doesn't seem to have had much effect on things really, I don't know if it makes it any less energy efficient - maybe when the door is open it does? The fan is located in this compartment. To be fair I wouldn't say there was any fault with it, it broke because was regularly force filled to bursting. My husband seems to think we have a bottomless freezer and regularly buys a ton of frozen food if it's on offer, even if the freezer is already full. I have become an expert on making the most of freezer space, getting rid of packaging and putting everything in bags. Apparently freezers work best when full so presumably ours is a consistent top performer. I've never defrosted this magic frost free freezer. Even after leaving the door open, (oops), the frost build up has cleared itself, I don't know how this works, but I'm glad it does. We do use a lot of freezer space, as I mentioned my husband is in the habit of bringing home lots of frozen/freezable bargains. A quick check tells me one drawer currently contains, amongst other items, no less than 6 quiches, (I checked, the plural of quiche is quiches, doesn't sound right does it?), so guess what I've decided to do for tea tonight? Because of this eccentric seeming but economically sound habit we could probably use a bigger model, but realistically, for normal people, this freezer should be more than sufficient for a family of three such as ourselves. ~Fridge~ The fridge came with four shelves, but we took one of them out as we wanted a tall wide space, they are easily removed and can be set at variable levels. The bottom shelf is glass and has two decent sized salad drawers underneath. The others are the usual wire rack style shelving, the next one up has a little door in the bottom that can be lifted up to stand bottles or tall cartons/other items in. The adjustable shelving means you can organise the food the way that suits you best. I have quite a small space at the top which is full of jars, with more variable sized items in the middle and taller items in the bottom, (not that I'm anal about it). In the door there are three trays; a large sided one at the bottom in which we keep milk and juice cartons, the middle one has an egg tray in it, (we removed ours as we don't keep eggs in the fridge), and another at the top. You need to keep an eye on what you put in this top one, as sometimes the packaging from items in here can get caught in the door so it doesn't seal properly, but there's room for manouevre with four shelf grooves. It's possible to place all three shelves lower down, but we prefer to have a wide gap between the bottom shelf and next one up. At the top of the fridge is the temperature adjustment and the light. We usually have the temperature set between two and three, it's a large round dial and easily moved, I have accidentally caused some items to ice up in there before. We don't use the light, my husband taped the switch to stop it going on, (told you he's eccentric - good job he never bothers to read my reviews), something about it being silly to have a filament bulb, (read 'heat source'), in a fridge and to be honest who really needs it anyway? I never wander around the kitchen in the dark. If the fridge gets jam packed with food, (or jam), it can lead to the odd soggy yoghurt lid, this is because of the self defrost mechanism which means water droplets form at the back, so it's best not to have food pushed up against the back of the fridge. The water droplets collect in a drainage channel and leave via a tube. It's possible for the tube to get blocked, if this happens the water will overflow into the fridge. I have had occasion to use the little plastic plunger to clear it, (the plunger is provided and lives in the top of the tube), but this hasn't happened often, so long as it's kept clean it's fine. ~Keeping it Clean~ As everything is removable it's all very easy to clean. The salad drawers need to be done the most often. If we get a bit low on provisions I'll empty everything out, remove the shelves from the fridge and door, give them all a good wash at the sink and give the inside a good wipe down. The top tends to gather dust as I have to stand on a chair to reach it properly. I keep a spice rack up there, one with all the lids facing outwards and I can reach up easily enough to use them, bear in mind I'm around 5' 11" so this mightn't be doable for most people. ~What Haven't I Mentioned?~ It has an A energy rating. It can make some odd noises, sometimes it will hum or buzz and occasionally it gurgles, but this doesn't seem to have any bearing on it's performance other than that it is occasionally noisy. It comes with a decent 20 page instructions leaflet which includes a 12 month guarantee card that you need to register for. Other Details: Annual Energy Consumption: 335 kWh/Year, Total Capacity: 269 litre (9.5 cubic ft), Fridge Capacity: 175 litre (6.2 cubic ft), Freezer Capacity: 94 litre (3.3 cubic ft)/ Freezing Capacity: 6 kg, Freezer Star Rating: 4 Star, Functions: Cold Wall Technology / Door Hinging: Reversible, Width: 59.5 cm, Height: 190 c, Depth: 60 cm, Weight: 69 k, Features: Dairy Compartment, Bottle Retainer, Adjustable Feet, Salad Crisper, Fruit & Vegetable Box, Egg Tray, Butter Box, Ice Cube Tray, Wire Shelf. Available in white or silver. Beko appear to have colonised my kitchen, first came the fridge freezer, then the washing machine followed by a cooker. If anyone's interested I have already mentioned the background to the company in my review of our washing machine, (http://members.dooyoo.co.uk/washing-machine/beko-wm6167/1433861), and I see no need to go into it here. Suffice to say I am a satisfied customer. Apart from the one or two very minor niggles mentioned, I think our fridge freezer is a splendid creature that has been excellent value for money.
