Advantages: Masses of room, ice maker, good looking fridge
Disadvantages: On the pricey side, but well worth it
Having recently purchased this monster of a fridge, I have ensured it has had enough time to settle in, and am now ready to review it. I purchased it from Curry's for the price of £599 (obviously using my cashback site, so technically, £573). Having slummed it with the tiniest of fridges whilst renting, I felt that it would be money worth spent on getting a humungous one.
Daewoo is a reputable company, established in 1971 and they supply a wide range of white and brown goods (electronic products, tv, stereo and the like).
Darth (the ice maker part, to me, at least, resembled Darth Vader, hence the name) arrived a month ago to the day, and has proved to be well worth the money.
As you'd expect for the size of fridge (H: 1790mm W: 900mm D: 730mm) there is ample storage space for all the family, and then some! There are multiple compartments which can be adjusted to fit your requirements. The safety glass shelves are solid and can store plenty of food. Half of the fridge is a freezer which has 9 compartments which can be filled to the brim. The fridge side has 11 compartments, including an egg tray. The user manual states how you should use these interior parts and food storage tips.
One of the brilliant features of Darth is that he superfreezes, when you want something cold and you want it now. I have recently used this feature to set some jelly and found it to only take a matter of minutes then transferred it to the fridge section - making the whole process alot faster. It has a twin thermostat - which means the freezer temperature can be dropped as far down as -22 and the fridge can be kept at a stable 4.
Being one of the most energy consuming household appliances that you could own a high rating is an important factor when considering which one to purchase. The efficiency rating is A, meaning that, compared to other fridges with a lower rating, this will cut down on energy usage, thus reducing gas and electricity bills.
Comparing Darth to other fridges, I chose him because visually he is stunning, the price was reasonable, and would more than fulfil my fridge requirements. The black colour goes very nicely with all my other black appliances and the silver effect kitchen serves as an amazing backdrop. Darth has recently bore a son, in the guise of a black washing machine, which i'll be reviewing at a later date.
When the delivery men were getting it into my house, my doors posed a problem. They had to take the doors off outside, then re-attach them once in the safety of my indoors. They did say that this was a common problem, so don't let the thought that it won't fit, put you off buying this extraordinary addition. In terms of positioning, it can't be flush with the wall as you need some space to allow the water filter to be attached. The 5m of micro tubing make it easy to attach to the water mains from quite a distance. It can be cut to size, once you've ascertained where Darth will live. The dispenser is very easy to use and very convenient, although slightly on the noisy side, I can't fault Darth as this feature has changed my life, for the better. For those of you with kids, there is a lock you can put on the ice maker.
As opposed to fridges back in the day, this one is frost free - meaning there's no trying to break things free from the back of the freezer compartment.
The user guide that came with Darth has a few pages stating various warnings and cautions - one which jumped out at me "do not let children hang on the refrigerator doors" - it made me chuckle - the idea of kids just swinging on the doors! I'm sure there's a serious side to this warning. Other such cautions involve noticing the power cord is damaged, and not attempting a little DIY.
When it comes to cleaning there are instructions about how to remove the various shelves and pockets, so as to ensure they are not damaged.
All in all, this is a brilliant side by side refrigerator and I would recommend everyone to go out and make this purchase of a lifetime!
Summary: Darth is the kind of fridge everybody needs!
