Advantages: a good-sized fridge/freezer for the price, particularly suited to six-foot tall body builders.
Disadvantages: stubborn door seal, fiddly egg tray.
The FF64 is the ‘Iced Diamond’ frost-free fridge/freezer. Available in white, almond or silver, this icy beast has stood in the corner of our kitchen for close on ten months now. The fridge and freezer are equally sized, the freezer occupying the lower portion of the unit. Inside the fridge are three adjustable wire shelves and a glass shelf. Beneath these sit two large salad boxes, each big enough to hold twelve average-sized cans of lager. Like any other standard fridge, the door is lined with compartments of varying sizes, one of the top ones being an egg tray that might just as well not be there. I consider myself to be a woman of average height, but what goes on in that egg tray is well above eye level. A plastic basket, with holes for the eggs, sits in a tray so deep that you just have to drop them in and hope for the best. You can’t even feel your way around with the other hand, since you are using it to hold up a plastic cover that opens barely widely enough to be practical. Frustratingly, while you can remove the trays for cleaning, the design of the egg tray makes it impossible to swap their positions around for easier access. The door seal on the freezer has a suction power to rival the escape velocity needed to break free of a black hole. It’s not that I’m short on muscle, as my job requires some heavy lifting, but opening that door can make you feel like you’ve gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson. The question “What’s for tea, mum?” inspires dread in my heart and a sound similar to the ‘Jaws’ theme tune in the back of my mind as the giant white eye in the corner stares menacingly back at me. Once successfully in, the first thing I often grab is a packet of frozen peas to slam on the bruises caused by ricocheting onto the kitchen wall as the door suddenly gives way. Dramatic? Maybe… but you try grappling with the monster! For those with enough stamina
to get inside, the freezer has a fast-freeze compartment, two removable baskets, and a smaller compartment at the bottom, all fronted by plastic flaps, which drop off fairly frequently. Over all, the unit is roomy, easy to clean, silent in operation, and good value for money. For these reasons, I would recommend it to a friend, but it would have to be a friend who was at least six feet tall, and blessed with the strength of Geoff Capes!

- 28/08/01 If I had it my way, anyone less than seven foot six would be rounded up and put in camps! What do you Earth people expect of white goods manufacturers, useable equipment?
A good opinion for Earth dwellers, though. |
