Advantages: Reasonable price, Looks good

Disadvantages: Could be more energy-efficient

IT WAS becoming increasingly obvious that the days of my old Beco fridge that fitted neatly underneath the kitchen work-surface were numbered.

The fact that it fitted neatly underneath the work-surface was part of the problem - the fridge was becoming too small to meet the needs of a growing family.

The demands placed upon the old thing seemed to be steadily increasing. More and more jars of pickles, sauces, jams, etc. seem to need immediate refrigeration once opened. The growing family needed larger containers of milk, yoghurts for pack-ups, etc. to be stored.

It was getting to the stage that when you opened the door the light was unable to shed any light on the contents because of the stuff crowded round it.

But there was a much more serious problem looming. The prospect of summer approaching without any facilities to cool beer down! Drastic action was needed.

I did toy with the idea of getting one of those big 1950s American-style fridges. But the price tag (about £750) put me off. Also - call me old-fashioned if you like - but I did not want to pay £750 for an appliance that had the word SMEG in big letters on it.

What about a fridge-freezer? They were a lot taller, but most of them split approx. 50/50 which made the fridge section not much bigger than the old one.

Then I saw the Indesit RG2251. This seemed to fit the bill perfectly. It has a large fridge section and a small freezer section. 187 litres for the fridge, 46 litres for the freezer.

It comes in silver, white and other colours and has a reversible door.

The price also seemed quite reasonable. I paid £230 at Curry's, though I later found out it was available for £199 at John Lewis.

The energy efficiency rating is C, which is about mid-range.

The fridge capacity is a big improvement on the old one. It has two large fruit and vegetable drawers at the bottom with three removable height adjustable shelves
above.

<br>The door has a shelf for large bottles at the bottom with a removable rail. There are a further two removable door shelves, one with an egg compartment.

The small freezer compartment has one removable shelf. It is ideal for storing a few regularly used items such as oven chips, chicken nuggets, ice lollies, etc.

I have been using the appliance for about 2 months now and have not had any problems with it.

Oh, nearly forgot . . . there's plenty of room to store beer in it as well!

Always buy from John Lewis if you can. You probably won't get cheaper anywhere. If you do see it cheaper, just mention it, they usually won't even bother to check.
