Much as a bit of a kitchen geek like me would love the snazziest fridge freezer in the world, I was sadly constrained by budget (new flat = haemorrhaging ££££!) and space - space for about 60cm wide appliance between the units and doorway.
I also really wanted a frost free appliance - defrosting the fridge/freezer must be one of the worst kitchen chores! In addition I wanted something with a reasonably good user reputation for cooling function and reliability (so lots of review site trawling!), quite good energy efficiency (while accepting that frost free is not ideal for this), decent capacity for its size, and that would be easy to clean. Realistically, the look was not so important as long as it wasn't actively ugly!
So, how has the Lec TF6096W measured up:
Price: I bought mine for about £350 after a trawl through price comparison websites, which for a frost free fridge freezer of its specifications is really not bad. You can pay a lot more for similar models in different brands.
Size and capacity:
This model is 186.5cm high and 59.5cm wide and 60cm deep - a perfect size for my needs though slimmer than what I had been used to which does impact on how much you can get in it. There is more fridge than freezer space, which again is what I wanted. There are 3 drawers in the freezer plus ice cube tray. The fridge has four glass shelves, a bottle rack and two salad/veg drawers, plus four shelves in the door. These can all be arranged at whatever height you want them, and slip in and out easily. The door is reversible. The front feet on the bottom are adjustable for uneven surfaces.
The auto defrost feature is working really well. After five months both refridgerator and freezer compartments are completely frost free. In terms of cooling and freezing speeds and consistency I have no complaints at all. I've only had it a few months but no problems so far with reliability.
For a frost free model of its size (and particularly budget!) I seem to remember the Lec TF6096 stood up fairly well - I did look through energy efficient websites to compare models. It is rated an A.
I have found this fridge-freezer very easy to clean. The shelves and door compartments all come out easily and the internal corners are mostly rounded so you don't get bits of crud stuck in corners. Well-designed.
Well, it's not exactly exciting. In fact I'd say it looks pretty boring, but it's not offensive or really ugly and I couldn't really expect cutting edge visual design at this price!
There is occasionally a bit of a buzzing noise from the fridge. It's not so loud as to be really annoying and it's not there all the time, but it's not ideal! Also the little thingumyjig you put in the door seal to stop it being too tight to open occasionally drops off the fridge door (the freezer compartment door doesn't have this problem). Again, not a huge deal as it's easy to put back on again, but not perfect.
All in all I'm very pleased with this purchase and think it has been really good value for money.
