Advantages: Quiet, and See Opinion

Disadvantages: Expensive for size

In common with all married couples of 'long-standing' (just approaching 27 years in our case), we have bought a number of personal possessions that we find it very difficult to 'do without'.

Thus, when we have stayed at hotels or with friends, when we return home, Heather will frequently say "Oh I did miss our "*******".

This "*******" may be our large bed, the facilities of our en-suite bathroom, the waste disposal unit in the kitchen, or (more recently) our LG GR 051 SSF fridge.

We bought this fridge in September 1997, for our younger daughter when going to Oxford University. She had been allocated a room in the 'old part' of Keble College and there was no kitchen area (and hence fridge) 'close-by' to her room, so we needed to buy a 'table-top' fridge to, shall we say, "lessen her unhappiness" whilst away from home.

There was a choice of two models at the local 'Curry's', and I cannot really remember why we chose the LG model over the other one (I think possibly that maybe it had a slightly larger freezer compartment). The model measures 50 cms tall, 44 cms wide and 46 cms deep. As can be seen from the excellent photograph on this page (that ever-reliable Emma from DooYoo has been able to paste on - Thanks Emma !!), it has a small freezer compartment and inside a single (non moveable) shelf and a door with room for 2 wine bottles (in place of the coke bottle in the photo), 2 or 3 other smaller bottles/cartons and some eggs. It cost £129.

I wanted to buy a 'normal size' Frigidare fridge (on offer for £99), but I was over-ruled (not unusual when there are a wife and 2 daughters to gang up on me !).

It was duly bought and delivered to Keble College (in the Espace with about 2 tonnes of other 'essential gear') in October 1997. We were lucky in that our daughter was always able to 'store' the fr
idge each summer with items that her over-seas friends were allowed to store over the holidays, so that the li'l fridge only came back to Edinburgh in June of last year when she had finished her finals. That is when the argument started (but soon finished).

Our younger daughter is 'sensible' (and thus takes after me - lol), so she decided that she didn't need it anymore for her future flat, finding it too small for practicality.

Our son, however, had obvioulsy coveted this fridge and said "Oh J.... doesn't want her fridge anymore, so I'll take it"

"But you don't need another fridge - there is a full size 'Frigidare' in our flat" (in the centre of Edinburgh which he had moved into at the beginning of June), I replied.

"But that's in the kitchen !!" he retorted "I need it in the bedroom"

"Whatever for ?"

"For my Beer!"

"In your Dreams !!!" said Heather, coming into the conversation.

She (who must be obeyed - by ALL!!) had made the decision. She also had plans for it, and that was in OUR bedroom and there it has remained. It has. indeed, made real difference to our personal lifestyle.

We have lived here for almost 20 years. One of the features that particularly attracted us to this house (and made us take out a much larger mortgage and enormous rates bill than we could sensibly afford) was the 'master bedroom suite', with not only a full size bathroom but a small 'dressing room' with built-in wardrobes between the bedroom and the bathroom.

This had been a perfect 'first nursery' for when our son was born (taking the cot and a feeding chair), and was later used for a wide double chest, the sewing machine set up permanently on top, and a Corby Trouser Press. There was the right amount of room on the remaining surface of the chest to plac
e the fridge, just next to the bathroom door but far enough away from the bed so that the small amount of noise from the fridge operation is not noticeable.

So what do we use the fridge for ?:

1. Three bottles of white wine (two of which can be open at any one time). We now always have a glass or two every evening (nice and cold).

So no more 'padding' downstairs to the kitchen where we may or may not have left a bottle to cool (and if not have to get a cool pack from the freezer and wait for it to take effect);

2 Ice cubes (in case we 'fancy' a G&T or I 'fancy' a scotch blend 'on the rocks' - NOTE NOT MALT WHISKY which must NEVER be with ice).

3 A lemon (see 2).

4 Small cans of tonic (see 2).

5 Mineral water and orange juice (to prevent the hangover after some good drinking sessions). So much nicer when cold.

6 Some pharmaceutical products (as a place to store them that slows any deterioration);

7 As an 'over-flow' fridge at Xmas and for dinner parties.

Now I am not suggesting that yoo should rush out and buy one of these marvellous items. But if yoo doo have to get one for your student offspring, and have enough space in your 'boudoir', then make them understand that is just 'on loan'.

Certainly, when this one goes to the great white goods graveyard, we shall definitely be buying a replacement.

From Heathergee:
You really should try it jillmurphy, then 'Roflybo'.

It is TRUE. It really does make a measurable difference to our quality of life (even more than it would have to our lazy son's !!!).

OK, we wouldn't have bought one specially for this purpose, but now we have one, well I hope that it goes on forever -

Lovely drop of COLD Muscat last night at midnight - just what I needed to help me relax.

If we won a miilion pounds and had a new 'fitted bedroom', then we would certainly have a fridge built in.
