Advantages: Size, space, roomy
Disadvantages: Need more space for banana and gin ice-cream, Keep eating the banana and gin ice-cream, getting fat eating banana and gin ice-cream
It’s well documented that I’m a slobess in the kitchen. Limited space, adventurous cooking and an ever hungry Morty make every inch matter, in my galley kitchen that is! As well as never having had a brand new cooker, I’ve never had a brand new freezer either. The layout of the galley has always meant I’ve had to put my assorted re-conditioned fridge/freezers right next to the cooker, making the compressor have to work overtime in order to maintain the correct temperature. The inevitable result is burn out after a two year period, and another second hand replacement from my friendly, local white goods supplier. I should add that as well as never cleaning an oven, I loathe defrosting freezers, always leaving it too late and inevitably spending hours with a Chinese chopper, manically hacking at the solid, glacier-like ice, inches thick, leaving only enough room in the freezer for a bag of frozen peas. My last fridge/freezer gave up the ghost at the same time as my sad old cooker, and I knew it was time for a rethink and reorganisation in the galley. Two separate units were called for, well away from the cooker, with the knowledge that if, as has always happened in the past, one or the other in a combined fridge/freezer blew a gasket, I could replace just the one dead appliance. A table top freezer seemed to be the answer, not taking up my precious space on the worktop, but to neatly sit in a base cupboard unit. The Haier Table Top Freezer, made in China, has solved my galley problems and does a perfect job. I’ve even read the instruction book. Particularly how to clean it. Staring back at me in bold letters is the quote “ Never use a metallic tool to defrost” So much for the Chinese chopper then? I have been supplied with a plastic scraper, and advised to scrape the frost layer off at 4-6mm thick. All I need now is a tape measure, as how thick is 4-6mm? The Haier Table Top Freezer fits
snugly into my cupboard, has a temperature control and stores an impressive 4kg of food. But I don’t know how much that is either in real money, although it appears to be a considerable amount, and is ample for my needs: ice-cubes for my summertime G & Ts! I don’t cook to freeze and don’t buy ready prepared frozen foods, but for those that do and are limited for space, this little freezer is a star buy. I live on the coast and I have used my 4kg allowance up with fresh haddock, mackerel, prawns, scallops and Morty’s favourite breakfast dish, locally smoked cod, all bought straight from the harbour. The other basic that has to have room in my shiny, new, ice free Haier Table Top Freezer is my very own, homemade Banana and Gin ice-cream. This is not deviation! Nor degeneration! It’s a life essential. Kitchen Slobess Recipe for Banana and Gin Ice-Cream. · Ripe Bananas · Gin · Lemon juice · Four eggs, separated · Pint of double cream lightly whipped · Castor Sugar Beat the egg yolks and the castor sugar together Add the whipped cream Puree the bananas, adding the lemon juice and mix with the eggs, sugar and cream Add the Gin Beat the egg whites until stiff Fold the egg white mix into the previous mix Put into a container and freeze The beauty of this ice cream is that it doesn’t need to be ‘paddled’ (I said ‘Paddled’ not ‘Puddled’) as ice crystals won’t form, even without the alcohol. Serving tip: Gin is very aromatic, so when you’ve scooped a large portion into a dish, pour a dash of Gin over it, and then prepare to go orgasmic! The egg, cream and sugar mix is the base for any real ice-cream: chocolate, coffee (use Camp) nuts, any soft pureed fruits and another boozy favourite that is always a sensation is Armagnac Ice Cream. Get your laughing gear round that my friends. I
was surprised to read in the instruction book, that an extremely cold room is an unsuitable place to install this appliance! But then it also instructs me that so is installing it next to a cooker or any other heat source. That’s something I did know already, from my own previous experience. The dimensions of this cute table top freezer, or in my case, cupboard freezer is as follows: Height-21 inches Width-19 inches Depth- 18 inches My independent local high street shop had the Haier Table Top Freezer selling at £110.00 including delivery, installation and removing and safely disposing of my old, burnt out freezer. Neat eh? I even like the way the door closes, with a soft, creamy ‘clunk’ like a new car, another consumer item that I’ve only ever owned from second hand. But I’m not bitter; after all, I do have Banana and Gin ice cream. Not everyone can say that, can they? Yet!

- 21/08/01 We ended up getting a frost-free freezer. Oh, how I hated de-frosting our old one.
This is another superb op. And that ice cream recipe sounds amazine (even if it doesn't contain any chocolate). :-) |

- 23/07/01 We had to put ours next to a radiator for years - I hate power sources fighting against each other like that! One problem with the ice-cream recipe - you've not mentioned how MUCH gin to put in (don't answer!). Tom |
